Mims McLendon

Mims (Mac) McLendon, age 99, died on Sunday, September 5, 2021 at his home in Pearl, MS. He is survived by two daughters; Shirlene Malone and Susan “Sam” Lewis, both of Pearl; one grandson, Steven Lewis of Brandon, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Bell McLendon, and his son, Marty McLendon.

Mims was born on November 5, 1921 in Mendenhall, MS to parents Ausie McLendon and Ophelia Williams McLendon. After high school he served with the U. S. Marines during World War II and then spent 40 years employed with Western Electric Telephone, retiring as a supervisor. Mims was a faithful member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, where he served for over 10 years as cook for the men’s monthly prayer breakfast. He also volunteered as a facilitator for special needs adults with the Region 8 Mental Health Services.

Mims was a devoted father to his children. During his working years, which often took him out of town, Mims normally came home only on weekends. But during basketball season, he was known for driving his orange and blue truck home almost every night to keep from missing one of his children’s games. Along with his beloved friend, the late Chief Bill Slade, Mims coached the team ‘Shady Ladies’, whose players included Carolyn Slade, Shelly Stuart, Bonnie and Kris Harper, Ruth and Terri Collins, Tracy, Dee Dee and Christy Bailey, and many more.

He loved working in his yard and family and friends will always remember him as having an immaculate yard brimming with gorgeous roses, with beautiful holiday decorations at Christmas. He also loved talking about his grandson, Steven, who was his buddy. He was known for allowing Steven to get away with so much more than he ever let his own children get away with. Enough said.

A graveside service is scheduled for 1:30 pm on September 11, 2021 at Floral Hills Memorial Garden in Pearl. Pastors Steven Koenig and Al Schubert of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church will officiate. All are welcome to attend and celebrate the life of Mims McLendon. The family would like to thank all who have prayed for us and brought food during this sad time. Flowers can be sent to Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home, Flowood, Ms or in Lieu of flowers: Donations can be sent to Multiple Sclerosis of Mississippi.
