I am a Veteran.DAVID "BURLEY" CHARLES BARTON

David "Burley" Charles Barton

David Charles “Burley” Barton passed into God’s arms suddenly on May 20, 2021 and leaves his family and friends behind to reunite with him in heaven. David was born on August 24, 1939 to George Henry and Carolyn Cox Barton in Jackson, MS. He attended Raymond High School, graduating in 1957. He then enlisted in the US Army in combination with pursuing college degrees, graduating from then Hinds Junior College, gaining a commission in the Army via Officer Candidate School, and graduating from Mississippi State University with a degree in Civil Engineering, and, later, from the Jackson School of Law. He left the service as a captain, having earned a Ranger tab and senior parachutist Airborne wings. He met the only woman who ever truly captured his heart, Martha White Cooper, and they married in 1968. They celebrated 53 years of marriage in March of 2021.

After working briefly for the Mississippi DOT, he started as an estimator for Warren Brothers Company (now APAC-Mississippi, Inc.) in 1966. Due to his leadership skills and business savvy, David rose through APAC over the years, becoming a vice-president and a company president, and he retired from APAC as a regional president leading various companies around the southeast United States. Subsequently, he joined the Mississippi Road Builders Association, with which he had been long associated during his years at APAC, and he served as their executive director for several years.

David maintained, grew, and loved the family farm where he grew up throughout his working career and actively managed it until his death. The first farmer to embrace no-till practices in Hinds County, he was passionate about conserving our natural resources in Mississippi. He was a commissioner with the Hinds County Soil and Water Conservation Commission and won multiple state and national awards for his conservation efforts. He was also on the board of directors of the Hinds Community College Foundation.

He was a man of many talents and substantial business success in all of his ventures, but, most of all, David was a husband and a father, who was known to his children and grandchildren as their Papa. He lived and loved big, and his name was always an action verb. He spent his life loving his family and passed with great memories and no unfulfilled dreams. Grief is the price you pay for love, and the Barton family’s grief is profound. However, they would pay that grief over and over again to have one more day in this world with him.

He is survived by his wife, Martha, and two sons, David (Roxane) and Barnes (Blythe), and six grandchildren, Chloe, David Kemp, Annabelle, Sydney, Caroline, and John Burke Barton.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, those who wish to express sympathy to consider a donation to the Hinds Community College Foundation for the David C. Barton Scholarship, PO Box 1100, Raymond, MS 39154. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 25th, at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Raymond (201 Hinds Blvd, Raymond, MS) from 9am-11am with a short memorial service at 11am.
