Shirley Wagner Chapman died at home in Yazoo City, Mississippi, on April 14, 2021. Born on August 7, 1921, in Muskegon Heights, Michigan, she was the daughter of Vera (Cochran) Wagner and Joseph Wagner. She attended the University of Grand Rapids, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

During World War II, she served in the United States Naval Reserve, the WAVES, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer and acting as the private secretary to Admiral Felix Stump, commander of the Pacific Fleet. She married Dr. John Darrington Chapman of Yazoo City on December 14, 1948, and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and Trinity Altar Guild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister, Elva, and a brother, Jack.

She is survived by her daughter, Cameron Chapman Seward (Byron); her grandchildren, Byron Robert Darrington Seward (Scarlet) and Cameron Egan Iselin (William); and her great grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Seward, John Byron Seward, Samuel Foster Seward, Darrington Knox Seward, and Louisa Chapman Iselin.

A private service will be held at Glenwood Cemetery in Yazoo City with Father P.J. Curley officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
