Elizabeth Jane Hicks, 60, passed away at her home in Flora, MS, on July 17, 2020.

She was the daughter of Dr. Billy R. Hicks, deceased, and Ann Hicks. She is also survived by her brothers: John, Mark (Lisa), and Randall (Robin) Hicks and her nieces, Claudia, Victoria, and Emma Hicks.

Jane was a graduate of Clinton (MS) High School, Mississippi College, and Yale Law School. From 1983 to 1984, she served as a Law Clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit. Jane then practiced law for a number of years in New York City before returning to Mississippi to teach at Mississippi College School of Law. She then joined a Jackson law firm, from which she retired.

We will never forget her brilliance and kindness. Jane’s generosity meant countless opportunities for her family and friends: she funded travel for her younger siblings, and while in New York, she was always a gracious host for out of town guests. Her sense of fair play and devotion to equity led her to offer pro bono legal services in several high-profile death penalty cases. She was truly committed to the principle of equal justice under the law. In the 1990s, while teaching in Mississippi, she spent a summer semester teaching law in Kyrgyzstan.

Jane loved reading, politics, art, travel, cooking, music, the New York Mets, and the Alabama Crimson Tide. She was a devoted companion to her animal friends.

There will be a private graveside service at Spruce Pine Cemetery in Franklin County, Alabama.

Memorial gifts may be sent to the Hicks-Girling Scholarship Fund, Mississippi College, Clinton, MS, 39058, or the charity of your choice.
