William Mitchell Bryson

Colonel William Mitchell Bryson was born early on the frosty morning of January 19, 1928 to Kathleen and Luther Bryson in Guntown, Mississippi. He attended Friar’s Point High School in Friar’s Point, Mississippi and graduated as salutatorian.

He began his military service on June 4, 1945, serving from Camp Shelby, Mississippi to Colorado and then Shaw Field, South Carolina in the Army Air Corps. Upon his honorable discharge, he attended the University of Mississippi on the GI Bill, was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, and graduated in June of 1949 with a Bachelor’s of Business, majoring in Insurance. He was a member of the first class of the insurance major. Through his college fraternity he made many lifetime friendships. Upon graduation, he began his insurance career in Jackson, working for the Insurance Commission. His career was interrupted from April 1950 through November 1952, when he was recalled to active service during the Korean War and was sent to Germany. He stayed in the Army Reserves until his retirement after 30 years.

After his military release, he returned to Jackson and the insurance business and soon met the love of his life, through a blind date, Dorothy Warwick. They had three children, Kathy Cooper (Billy Cooper) of Rome, Ga (Children -Chris Cook, Bryson Cook, and Heather Cook-Addington), Janet Flint (Calvin Flint) of Batesville, MS (daughter- Katie McDaniel Bass), and Sam Bryson (Rachel Bryson) of Clinton, MS (children- Emily, Maggie, & Audrey Bryson). Bryson & Company Insurance Agency was established and managed by Bill and his son, Sam for over 20 years. Bill later married Mary Nell Harn, and enjoyed having her in his life for a brief time.

Colonel Bryson was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Clinton, served as a Sunday School teacher and cooked breakfast with the Methodist Men. He was a former member of the Jackson Exchange Club, and the Clinton Jaycees. He was the past president of the Professional Insurance Agents Association of Mississippi, and a former Vice President of the National PIA. Bill was also a member of the Pioneer Insurance Club. He has been a member of the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters Society since 1971.
Colonel Bryson is survived by his children, grandchildren, and six great grandchildren, all of whom he dearly loved. Bill’s happiest days were with his family and at Ole Miss football games.

A memorial service will be held at 4pm Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at First United Methodist Church in Clinton. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the parlor.
