CELIA WOOD SHAW

Celia Wood Shaw

On September 9, 2021, Celia Wood Shaw went to be with the Lord. She passed peacefully at her home of 60 years, that stood at the top of a beautiful hill in the countryside in Raymond, MS. Visitation will be held Saturday September 11, 2021, 1:00 pm at Raymond Presbyterian Church in Raymond, MS, the funeral service to follow at 2:00pm. Graveside Services will follow at 3:00pm at Lakewood Memorial Park..

Celia was born June 5, 1929 on a farm in Tylertown, MS to the late Alma McCain Wood and Henry Albert Wood Sr. She graduated from New Zion School where she was an outstanding member of the basketball team. Following high school, she graduated from Draughon’s Business School in Jackson, MS, and went on to work for the Russell Company in Jackson. While working in Jackson, she met her husband, Attorney George E. Shaw. George loved to fly and swooned Celia on their first date with a flight around Jackson. George and Celia were married for 57 years, and during that time they continued to enjoy flying and travelling the world together.

Celia was an active part of the Raymond community serving with the Hinds County 4-H, Girl Scouts, and was an active member of the Raymond Presbyterian Church for over 60 years. As a member of the church she served with the Women of the Church, sang in the choir, and worked with the children of Vacation Bible School.

In addition to serving, Celia loved to travel with her family. She spent many years cheering on her grandchildren at horse shows, and always greeted them after school everyday with one of her favorite home cooked southern dishes. When she wasn’t travelling, she would make sure that she tuned in to cheer on her Atlanta Braves. She was an avid sports fan, she had a passion for life, and she was always planning the next adventure.

Mrs. Shaw was preceded in death by her beloved husband George E. Shaw Jr., her son George E. “Buddy” Shaw III, her brother Bill Wood, and sisters Edith Blackwell, Inez Dillon, Francis Thomas, Alfreda Watts.

Mrs. Shaw is survived by her daughter Sandra Shaw Pope and her husband Robert of Dadeville, AL. She is also survived by her grandchildren John J. Pope and his wife Jordan (John Rowdy and Eliza Jane) and Dr. Crystal Adams and her husband Chad (Brady and Beau).

Zack Byrd and David Irving will be officiating the funeral service. Music will be provided by Mrs. Joy Lyles. Serving as pallbearers will be John Pope, Chad Adams, Henry Albert Wood III, Troy Skinner, Dr. Clarke Stewart, John Lipscomb, Bubba Skinner and Shayne Foreman.

On behalf of the family we would like to thank Home Instead and their loving team of caregivers Rachel Sentell, Angela Smith, and Barbara Young. We would also like to thank Sta-Home Hospice, and her attending physician Dr. James Polk.

In lieu of flowers, please make any memorial contributions to Raymond Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1414, Raymond, MS 39154.
