Betty Jeanne Lupo Crowell

Betty Jeanne Lupo Crowell, passed peacefully on Sunday January 10, 2021 at the Orchard in Ridgeland, MS.

For 66 years Betty was the wife of Colonel O. Charles Crowell of Rankin County, she was the daughter of the late Olive Franklin and Oma Dell Lowery Lupo of Wesson, MS.

She is survived by her husband, Colonel Olyn Charles Crowell; her daughters, Deborah Crowell Crystal (Clay) of Jackson, MS and Edith Diane Crowell of Monroe, LA; grandchildren, David Crystal and Benjamin Crystal of Jackson, MS; Lindsay McBride (Brian) of Austin, TX; Haley Wheeler (Tyler) of Monroe, LA; great grandchildren, Landry Wheeler of Monroe, LA and Grey Charles McBride of Austin, TX; sister, Edith L. Drummonds of Pearl, MS; nephew, Kenneth Drummonds of Clinton, MS; niece, Cindy Janis (Fred) of Keller, TX and many cousins and great friends.

She was born in Hazlehurst, MS on the 28th day of November 1933 and graduated from Hazlehurst high school and Copiah Lincoln Junior College. She was a member of the famous Colettes marching drill team that performed at many state and national events and selected as most beautiful while in college. She also held various titles such as Miss Hazlehurst, Miss REA of Mississippi and Miss Travel of Jackson, MS. After graduation from college, she was employed at Board of Trustees Institution of Higher Learning for a short period of time before being employed by University of Mississippi, at the time it moved to Jackson from Oxford, as secretary to the Director of Nursing and later as Executive Secretary to the Dean, Dr. Pankrats of the University Medical School for a number of years before starting her family.

Betty was very active in her community with her children’s lives in Girl Scouts, school PTA, swimming teams and other activities. She was an active member of Wesley United Methodist church where she taught children’s Sunday school for many years and later on at St. Mark’s United Methodist church on the reservoir where she served as chairman of the Memorial Committee for a number of years, plus several other committees.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday at 2:00 pm in the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Newton, MS.

In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate remembrance to one of the following; St. Mark’s United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 400 Grants Ferry Road, Brandon, MS 39047, Hospice Ministries or any other charity of your choosing.
