Sue Rodriguez

Jimmie “Sue” West Rodriguez passed away on October 22, 2020, with her nieces by her side. The youngest of five children, Sue was born in Waynesboro, MS, to Harvey and Phoebe Jane West, on July 1, 1940. Sue graduated from Beat Four High School where she played basketball. She was also a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where she sang in the choir.

After moving to Jackson, Sue joined Parkway Baptist Church where she remained an active member for almost 50 years. Sue was a member of the Singles Sunday School Class and along with fellow member, Connie Hudson, visited the sick and those unable to attend services. Sue often said she gained more from the ministry than she gave, but she certainly brought a smile to those they visited on a weekly basis. All members the The Singles Sunday School Class have been faithful to call, send cards and letters, and prepare favorite foods throughout Sue’s illness.

Sue never had children of her own, but was both a special aunt and second “Mom” to her many nieces and nephews, as well as their offspring. Aunt Sue or “Sue Sue” as she was often called, was a favorite “aunt” to many in her extended family, including neighbor children, and she was always available as a loving babysitter and was affectionately known as the “fun aunt.”

Sue married Sammy Rodriguez in 1994 and they made their home in Waynesboro, until his death in 2003. Sue then relocated to Brandon, MS, where she resided until her passing.

Sue enjoyed traveling and even traveled extensively throughout Europe with a niece years ago. She also enjoyed frequent travels with her family and friends and maintained a busy schedule serving others as long as her health allowed. Her actions were certainly a testament to her love for her Lord and Savior.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Sammy Rodriguez, and siblings, Effie Jane DeSantis, Pauline Petermann, Albert West, and Clifford West. Also preceding her in death were Linda Jane DeSantis, niece age 4, who passed away on a ship while her father served overseas in the armed forces, and her loving nephew Mark Benjamin Herzog, 27, who passed away in January 2020, while on a medical rotation in New Zealand. Mark would have graduated from Harvard Medical School in May and he kept close tabs on his Aunt Sue calling her at least weekly to see how she felt. Sue often spoke of the anticipated joy upon seeing them in heaven!

Sue leaves behind many nieces and nephews and other extended family and friends who loved her and will miss her but rejoice knowing she is in heaven!

Also, left behind is John Guessner, her loving and faithful soulmate. Sue and John have enjoyed family functions and activities with our families for years, and have supported one another through frequent health crises. John is a pilot and Sue often flew with him across the country to various air shows or just for fun. He is considered an official member of our extended families and we love him dearly, almost as much as Sue did.

The family would like to extend our thanks to everyone, including the doctors, nurses and staff, at all facilities, who cared for and loved Sue during her extended illness. We will be forever grateful for your love and support.

Last but not least, thank you to Brother Ken Anderson and staff, and friends at Parkway Baptist Church, for your unwavering love and attention to all of us. Special thanks to cousin and Pastor Jim Petermann for your love and hugs during Sue’s most recent hospital stay.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sue’s memory to the Parkway Baptist Church Benevolence Fund, 802 N. Frontage Road, Clinton, MS 39056
