Darryl Kent Ballard

Darryl Kent Ballard passed away on Monday, July 27, 2020 at the age of 55 after a sudden and short battle with COVID-19.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Thelma Christine Johnson and brother, Mark E. Ballard.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Brenda Ballard, his son, Blake A Ballard and his father, Roy Edward Ballard of Maryville, TN.

Darryl graduated from Germantown High School (Germantown, TN) in 1983, and attended the University of Memphis. Darryl’s work career began as a Manager with the McDonald’s Corporation in Memphis, TN. He later worked at Galloway Metal Fabricators and Fischer Steel Corporation in the Memphis area before relocating to Brandon, MS to begin his almost 24-year career with Steel Service Corporation in Flowood, MS.

Darryl was an active scouter with both BSA Pack 300 and Troop 300 of Lakeside Presbyterian Church. When Blake was a Cub Scout, Darryl was an active parent with the Pack participating in campouts and the Pinewood derby. When Blake crossed over to Boy Scouts, Darryl joined as a leader serving an Assistant Scout Master 2004-2007 and The Committee Chair 2008 – 2013. Besides his leadership roles, Darryl was active with the boys serving as a merit badge counselor, going on campouts, and helping scouts with their skills and Eagle Projects. Darryl worked at making sure the boys had fun, gave back, and set goals. One of his fun items was introducing his lovable alter Scout Leader ego “Bob”, who always had boys and adults rolling in laughter during campouts and Courts of Honor. Darryl balanced the fun by pointing out to the boys to give back. One of these givebacks was Darryl being instrumental in starting the “Pine Wood Derby Garage.” The Garage was a time for the Boy Scouts to help the Cub Scouts build their Pinewood Derby cars. The Pine Wood Derby Garage taught everyone that giving back was fun, helpful, and rewarding. Finally, Darryl taught the boys to set goals. He did this by setting his own goal to earn his Wood Badge, the highest badge a leader can earn, Darryl received his Wood Badge in 2006. He showed the boys that at any age, you could set goals and achieve them. Darryl used fun, giving back, and goal setting to not only mentor Blake to the rank of Eagle Scout but numerous other boys too. After Blake aged out of scouting, Darryl continued to give back and help boys. Since 2014 he has continued to serve as a Troop 300 Committee member. He also became a Certified NRA instructor in 2019 and gave a week of his vacation to run the gun range at Camp Hood during Scout Summer Camp, where he taught scouts gun safety and how to shoot.

Darryl had a long-time love for rebuilding classic cars, playing acoustic guitar and avidly supporting Tennessee Vols football. All of these passions he most enjoyed being able to share with his son, Blake. For the last 15+ years, Darryl spent his nights in the Fall with the Northwest Rankin Middle and High School Football Teams. He took photos for the Booster Club during both home and away games.

The family appreciates all thoughts and prayers at this time. A celebration of Darryl’s life is being planned and will be held at Lakeside Presbyterian Church once the COVID-19 restrictions have been eased. The family will announce the details as soon as they are available.
