Melba Wesson

Melba Stripling Wesson was born in Macon, Ga., on September 1, 1953, and died on March 24, 2020 at the age of 66. She was preceded in death by her parents Bennie F. and Susie Iola Stripling. She is survived by Dan, her husband of 47 years; their daughter Hannah (Jon) West and grandsons Caleb and Henry; her sister Gennie (James) Johnson and their son Cody (Casey) Johnson; her sister Debora Stripling; her niece Ashley (Dolan) Kincaid and their daughter Alyssa; her nephew Hunter Cox.

Melba grew up on a small farm in Kathleen, Ga. Her family moved to Memphis in 1965. As a high school senior, she met Dan at a fall party at a neighbor’s house. In July of 1971, he asked for her hand in marriage, and they were married on June 30, 1972. They moved to Albany, Ga., and then to Key West, Fla., where Dan was stationed in the Navy. In 1976, his tour of duty was up, and they returned to Memphis, Tenn. where their daughter was born. Work moved them to Meridian, Miss., and in 1979, to Clinton, Miss. That same year they joined Morrison Heights Baptist Church and a few years later Melba joyfully began what would be nearly 30 years of service rocking babies in the church nursery.

During their years of marriage, she and Dan enjoyed driving trips throughout the United States to see the glories of God’s creation. Her favorite place to travel was visiting her grandchildren, who were her joy and delight. She also loved being at home, decorating, cooking, keeping house, gardening, and making things to share with others. Crocheted baby gifts, handmade cards, and sourdough cinnamon rolls were mainstays of her industrious routine. In recent years, her weekly highlights nearly always included lunch and errands with beloved friends, conversations with Hannah, and drives on the Natchez Trace with Dan where they would admire the beauty of the changing landscape in each season. Her favorite hymn was “This Is My Father’s World.”

A private graveside funeral service will be held at Lakewood Memorial Park in Jackson, Miss. At a later date a public memorial service will take place at Morrison Heights Baptist Church in Clinton, Miss. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Morrison Heights Baptist Church, 3000 Hampstead Blvd, Clinton, MS, 39056; or Hospice Ministries, 450 Towne Center Blvd, Ridgeland, MS, 39157.
