HELEN JEAN SAULS THORNTON

Helen Jean Sauls Thornton passed from this life to her heavenly home, Sunday, February 9, 2020. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Thornton, parents Edward and Corona Sauls, her siblings, Bettye, Kenton, Joe, John, Becky, and Billie and their spouses. She is survived by her children: Janice Cate (Martin) of Gluckstadt, Michael (Sandra) of Brandon, and Gene (Doreen) of Powder Springs, Georgia; grandchildren: Emily Sabree (Ben) of NYC, Joey Cate (Jessie) of Memphis, Karen Waltman (Blake) of Brandon, and Kimberly Thornton of Oxford; great-grandchildren: Liam Sabree, David Sabree, and Ava Leigh Cate and numerous nieces and nephews.

Helen and her twin brother John were born at home in Brookhaven on March 23, 1925. She graduated from Jackson Central High School and worked for Kennington’s and Bell Telephone Company. After marriage she was a full-time homemaker. An avid reader, a blue ribbon winning seamstress, prolific flower grower and music lover she encouraged each of her children to learn to play an instrument and take part in musical groups. She participated in Clinton Homemakers where she was president, treasurer, and hostess of the Christmas luncheon.

Her church homes included Calvary Baptist, Forest Hill Baptist, First Baptist Clinton and Park Hill Baptist where she volunteered in children’s Sunday School, Bible Drill, Missions, and Vacation Bible School. She loved to visit shut-ins and shared flowers from her garden with them. Favorite pastimes were playing dominoes and playing every kind of card game except Bridge. In her later years she was honored as a heritage quilter by having two of her quilts exhibited at the Agriculture Museum.

Helen and Dennis enjoyed traveling in their travel trailer across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Some memorable trips included visits to National Parks like the Grand Canyon, driving up the west coast highway, traveling by ferry to Alaska, flying in a helicopter over Mount St. Helen, and camping at Lake Louise. In the 1960’s they spent a summer visiting Mississippi state parks and campgrounds in one of the original staycations.

In lieu of flowers please consider donating to one of Helen’s favorite charities: Gideons International or Shriners Children’s Hospitals.

Visitation is at Clinton Wright and Ferguson from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm on Friday, February 14, 2020. The graveside service is at Lakewood at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 14, 2020.
