On Saturday, September 5th, 2015, family and friends of Wyatt Newman lost a man of integrity, kindness and humor when he died at his home after a 19 month battle with pancreatic cancer. His wife of 52 years, Janet, was by his side.
Wyatt was born June 14th, 1942, to Hazel Langston and Wyatt Willard Newman. He was a 1960 graduate of Clinton High School. During high school he played viola with various Jackson musical groups and with the Jackson Symphony Orchestra. He served in the Navy from 1960 to 1963, and was a 1961 graduate of the United States Naval School of Music in Washington, D.C. Wyatt played with the 13th Navy District Band in Seattle as well as the 17th Navy District Band out of Kodiak, Alaska. He was also a member of the 41st Army Band of the Mississippi National Guard. Wyatt's love of music continued most recently as the string bass player with the Mississippi Community Symphonic Band.
Throughout his life Wyatt had a wide range of interests, including sailing, Civil War reenactments, wine making, astronomy, back yard chickens, old trucks, pottery, banjo, guitar, and traveling. He taught a Friday spinning class at the Clinton HealthPlex for ten years. He served over 30 years in the contract hardware industry as a representative of major lock manufacturers
He was a faithful member of Saint Stephen's Reformed Episcopal Church in Flowood, where he was currently serving a second term as a member of the vestry.
He married Janet Basford on June 22, 1963, when both were students at Mississippi College. They had two sons of whom he was extremely proud, Wyatt Jefferson Newman (Becky) of Lumberton, Texas, and Daniel Bowie Newman (Shannon) of Sugar Land, Texas and four beloved grandchildren Sarah, James, Grace, and Claire. In addition he is survived by his brother James Newman (Susan) and his mother Hazel Newman Hemphill, all of Clinton. He was preceded in death by his father Wyatt Willard Newman
The family wishes to thank all the wonderful caregivers whose expertise made his long journey possible, especially his brother James Newman.
Visitation will be Friday, September 11 from 6 to 8 PM at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Clinton, and 10 to 11 Saturday at Saint Stephen's Church in Flowood, followed by a memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Stephen's Church (5049 Lakeland Drive, Flowood MS, 39232) or the Mississippi Community Symphonic Band (4244 Brussels Drive, Jackson MS 39211).
