Obituary

William Walter "Bill" Correll, age 93, passed away on March 8, 2019 just one day shy of his 94th birthday.
Bill was a Jackson native and a resident of Madison who served in WWII from 1943-1945 as a member of the 2nd Battalion, 398th Infantry Regiment, 100th Infantry Division. He served in the Vosges Mountains near Alsace, France. Bill was a point man during his time in WWII and suffered severe frostbite during this time of warfare against the Germans. He received a medical discharge in 1946. In 2013, he received the French Legion Medal of Honor for bravery and for helping liberate France. Bill was a charter member of the WWII Museum in New Orleans, LA. He was thrilled and honored to participate in the Mississippi Gulf Coast Honor Flight in November 2013. Bill's time during WWII has been documented by WLBT for the Veteran's History Project & can be viewed on YouTube.
Bill was born in Jackson, lived in New Orleans and Louisville, KY and graduated from Central High School in 1943. After his service to our country, he attended Millsaps College (at the same time as the famous Johnny Carson), graduating with a bachelor's degree in Chemistry in 1949. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity while at Millsaps. Bill also attended the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 1960 where he took classes on the use of Radioisotopes in Medicine. He worked at the VA Hospital in Jackson for 35 years in the research lab, where he excelled in his work. He was an avid squirrel hunter and loved to teach others how to hunt and fish, and he loved a good joke! Bill was a walking ancestry book, keeping his family informed on its lineage in the Spengler family and its place in Jackson history. He loved going to Piccadilly and to Table 100, and he regularly attended the Military History Club meetings in Jackson.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Mary Ruth Conrad Correll, and his daughter, Charlotte Marie Correll, his brother Edward K. Correll, Sr. and his parents, William Kingston Correll & Hazel Elizabeth Moses Correll. Bill would brag on his daughter and how smart she was at every opportunity!
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Gene Correll, his nieces, Jan Thornell (Ron) of Tyler, TX, Genie Correll Richie of N. Little Rock, AR and Debbie Correll Simpson of Shreveport, LA, and a nephew, Edward Correll, Jr. of Shreveport, LA, as well as a host of cousins in the Hetrick and Moses Families. His sweetheart, Kathy Milford, will continue to play his favorite songs for years to come. The family would like to thank Dr. Todd Sherwood, his best friend, and Dr. Phyllis Hollenbeck for their care and guidance during Bill's final days. Bill has requested that his body be donated to UMMC. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 31 at 2:00 p.m. at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Flowood. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation in his memory to the Honor Flight Program.
