Mr. William "Herbert" Butts of Raymond died October 28, 2017 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland at the age of 91.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Maxine Keyes Butts, a daughter, Kathy Butts Arnold of Atlanta, sons Larry Butts (Helen) of Jackson, Barry Butts of Ellisville, Roy Butts (Emily) of Madison, and grandchildren, Victoria Arnold, Wallace Arnold, Jack Butts, Will Butts, Anna Jordan Butts, Hayden Butts, and Mary Claire Butts, sisters Carolyn Woodman (Robert) of Petal, and Ann Daniels of Memphis, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover Butts and Pearl Howell Butts of Edwards, a brother, Roy Howell Butts of Edwards, a sister, Jeanette Smith of Vicksburg and a grandson Ross Winston Arnold of Atlanta.
Herbert was born September 7, 1926 in Edwards and was a 1944 graduate of Edwards High School. After serving in the United States Navy in Chicago and at Camp Perry, Virginia, during World War II, he returned to Mississippi to earn his bachelor's degree at the University of Southern Mississippi and a Masters of Education from Mississippi College. He retired from the Jackson Public School system in 1987 after spending 35 years teaching math, history and social studies and also coaching basketball. He spent his retirement traveling throughout the US and Canada, gardening and spending time with family.
Herbert was an active member of Raymond United Methodist Church since 1965 serving on various committees, ushering and teaching Sunday school.
Visitation will be held at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Raymond, Sunday, October 29, 2017 from 4-6 pm and on Monday, October 30, 2017 from 1-2 pm with funeral services following at 2 pm at Wright & Ferguson in Raymond. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Raymond United Methodist Church at P.O. Box 64, Raymond, MS 39154.
