Walter Earl "Bitt" Hammons, a long-term resident of the Jackson area passed away on July 18th, 2021 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland after an extended battle with cancer.

Bitt was born on July 22nd, 1948 in Laurel, MS to the late B. H. Hammons and the late Evelyn F. Hammons. Bitt was raised in Richton, MS along with his older brother Bob Hammons (Ginger) of Kingston, TN and graduated from Richton High School in 1966 and then completed his Bachelor's degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1971. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Order and remained life-long friends with many of his fraternity brothers. He was an avid golfer and outdoorsman. He was a member of First Baptist Church – Ridgeland. He never met a stranger enjoyed being with people.

Bitt is survived by his children: Shelly Hammons Coggin (Larry) of Tupelo, MS; Jennifer Hammons Willits of Collierville, TN; and Trey Denton (Julie) of Madison, MS. He was especially proud of his grandchildren: Ben Coggin (Jessica) of Decatur, AL; Claire Coggin of Florence, AL; and the twins Reese and Riley Willits of Collierville, TN. He enjoyed his nephews and nieces: the late Gene Yeatman; Mark Yeatman; Melanie Yeatman Danner (Tom); Rob Hammons (Stacy).

Honorary Pallbearers are the members of the Cedar Grove Hunting Club in Natchez, MS

Visitation will be held at 1:00 on July 22, 2021 at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home located at 114 Burney Road, Flowood, MS. Services will follow at 3:00 with Dr. Mark Byrd officiating. There will be no graveside service.
