W. E. "Gene" Amis, 84, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2018, at his home surrounded by his family. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 am on Saturday, November 10, 2018 with visitation beginning at 9:45 am at Holy Savior Catholic Church in Clinton, where he was a long time member. A graveside service will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.
Gene was born in Greenfield, MS (Newton County) on February 6, 1934, to Murray and Gladys Amis. He graduated from St. Joseph Catholic High School in Jackson, MS where he played baseball, football, and basketball with his three brothers; Murray, Billy, and Travis. He attended Mississippi College where he played baseball. He continued on to play semi-pro baseball. His team advanced to the National Championship in Wichita, KS. He married his high school sweetheart, Shirlee Hobbs. They were married for 64 years and had 6 loving children; three boys and three girls. Gene and Shirlee also have 14 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He retired from the ICG railroad where he worked as a General Yardmaster for 43 years. His favorite sidekick was Maggie, his standard poodle, who loved to follow him around while he was piddling outside, working in his yard, and growing vegetables in his garden. He enjoyed sharing his abundance of vegetables with neighbors and church members. Gene was also an avid fisherman and often spoke of his fishing trip to Alaska. He enjoyed reading and watching sports, especially his favorite teams; the New Orleans Saints, Ole Miss Rebels, and Atlanta Braves. His most favorite past time was making his "sweetie" Shirlee, happy. His faith was strong and some of his last words included his statement - "I'm ready to see Jesus."
Gene was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will forever be remembered by his wife, Shirlee Hobbs Amis; his six children, Jeanie A. Hill (Edgar), Steven Amis (Chelye), Pattie A. Minton (David), Gary Amis (Sonya), Eddie Amis, and Julie A. Hornaday (Stephen). "Papaw" will also be remembered by his grandchildren; Angela H. Lasseigne, Michael Hill, Jennifer H. Whittington, Blakely Amis, Doug Minton, Stephanie M. Ulmer, Markus Minton, Austin Amis, Andrew Amis, Alex Amis, Amber Amis, Morgan Amis, Molli Amis, and Matthew Hornaday.
