Virginia Elaine Kitchens, a devoted mother, grandmother, and beloved friend to many, passed away on May 20, 2026, in Florence, Mississippi. She was born on June 12, 1944, in Jackson, Mississippi to Willette Beasley Reed (Greer) and the late Willie Shelton Reed, Jr. (W.S).
She lived a life marked by kindness, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to her family and community. Ginny’s academic journey began at Utica High School, followed by studies at Hinds Junior College. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Mississippi State College for Women (MSCW), which laid the foundation for her lifelong vocation as a teacher. Ginny dedicated many years to shaping young minds, primarily teaching sixth grade at REBUL Academy. After her tenure there, she continued to impart knowledge and wisdom at Hinds Community College for over 25 years. Ginny was a lifetime member of Utica Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and served the church in many areas throughout her life.
Throughout her life, Ginny was known for her radiant smile and infectious laughter, traits that brightened the days of all who crossed her path. Her creative spirit found expression in her passions for cooking, baking, and gardening. Whether celebrating birthdays, special occasions, or simply ordinary days, she delighted in preparing and sharing “favorites” with those she loved. Her grandchildren affectionately called her “G” and she proudly shared all the details about “the grans” whenever someone asked or listened.
Ginny’s kindness extended beyond her family; she welcomed every person she met as a lifelong friend, embracing strangers with a warm heart and open arms. This genuine compassion and selflessness have left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy is one of love, friendship, and unending kindness, qualities that will continue to inspire and comfort her family and friends.
She is lovingly survived by her husband, Denny Kitchens; her son Shane Kitchens and his wife Nicole; her daughters Mandy Boyanton and her husband Mike, and Shelley Stringer and her husband Michael. Her four precious grandchildren—Ben Michael and Lyla Reed Stringer, Maley Grace Boyanton, and Maggie May Kitchens—will carry forward her memory as their treasured “G.” Also surviving Virginia is her aunt, Kaye Newman, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. She is also lovingly remembered by her faithful dog, Zeke. Ginny was preceded in death by her parents.
A visitation to honor and remember Ginny will take place on May 30, 2026, from 9:30 am – 11:00 am followed by a memorial service at 11:00am both at Utica Christian Church located at 316 East Main Street, Utica, Mississippi.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Danielle Kuper and the entire Vital Caring staff for their exceptional love, care and support. They are also very grateful to Tina Warnock and Brenda Tillman for the tender care they provided to “G” and their kindness will never be forgotten.
Virginia Elaine Kitchens lived a life full of dedication, love, and generosity. Her memory will forever remain a blessing to all who were touched by her presence.
Please make any donations in Ginny’s memory and honor to Mercy House Women and Children’s Campus in Learned, MS (5257 Learned Road, (855) 893-7333) or to Utica Christian Church.
