Obituary

Verdie Newton Lindsey passed away Wednesday, November 4, 2015.

Verdie was born on July 17, 1920, the youngest of seven children to A.C. and Belle Storm Newton in Brookhaven, MS. She married Clifton (C.O.) Lindsey in the early 40's and they attended Mississippi College and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary where she received the Bachelor's Degree of Religious Education. After graduating, they moved around the state of Mississippi several times before settling in Clinton. Along the way Verdie began a career helping those less fortunate at Goodwill Industries. Over her twenty-three years there she rose from Executive Secretary to Assistant Director.

In 1949, she welcomed her first child, Rebecca, into the world. Three years later, her son Ron was born. She is also survived by grandson Neal Novak and his wife Tracy, grandson Grant Novak, great grandson Hunter Novak and Rebecca's husband William Welborn Johnson.

Family, countless friends, and faith were the center of Verdie's long, rich life. Of Verdie's journey she said, "I have been led by the Holy Spirit."

One could safely say that Verdie never met a stranger. Anyone who ever met her likely received a birthday or greeting card. Aside from penning letters in her beautiful calligraphy, her other lifelong interests included music, art, and literature as evidenced by their professions she clearly passed those passions onto her talented children.

Verdi's beautiful spirit and presence will be greatly missed. She was known to say, "Everyday I count my blessings as fast as I can, and my list is just getting longer and longer!"

Funeral services will be held Saturday, the 7th of November at 1:00 p.m. with visitation at 12:00 p.m. at Wright and Ferguson Chapel, 106 Cynthia Street in Clinton. Memorials can be made to Goodwill Industries of Mississippi or Episcopal Church of the Creator.
