Thomas C. Fenter, M.D., passed away July 15, 2025. Visitation will be Saturday, July 19, from 10am until noon at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Flowood Mississippi with a service at noon. Tom was born in Brookhaven Mississippi on June 21, 1944 and was the only child of Mickey and Clell Fenter. He grew up in Hazlehurst Mississippi and attended Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. He earned his medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 1970. He completed a one-year internship and a year of general surgery training at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, Texas and finished his residency in urology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 1975. Tom served two years as a major in the United States Air Force at Malcolm Grow Medical Center at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. He joined the Mississippi Urology Clinic in 1977, and was certified as a fellow of the Board of Urology in 1979.
Tom was past President of the American Association of Clinical Urologists. He was a member of the Mississippi State Medical Association and also served on their Board of Directors. In 1982, he served as Chief of Staff of Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi.
Tom had a successful urology practice for 28 years with the Mississippi Urology Clinic in Jackson, Mississippi. He began his career at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi in 1989 as Chairman of the Medical Policy Committee. In 1995, he was appointed Executive Director of Managed Care, and he joined the Company full-time in September 2003 as Corporate Medical Advisor. In 2013, he became Chief Medical Officer, where he served for ten years before becoming Strategic Medical Advisor.
A champion of quality healthcare, Tom also served as Chairman of the Board of the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation. His leadership resulted in years of partnership and shared mission in support of a healthier Mississippi and expanded access to quality healthcare. Most recently in May 2025, his dedication resulted in the opening of the new Maternity Care Center, a team-based, family physician and nurse-midwife best practice care model, in Indianola, Mississippi at the South Sunflower County Hospital. The new Maternity Care Center marks a major milestone for access to quality maternity care for women and families in the Mississippi Delta.
Tom was known for his adventurous spirit, always eager to explore new places. Traveling was one of his greatest passions, and he embraced every journey with enthusiasm. He also had a deep love for cooking, often experimenting with new recipes inspired by his travels. The kitchen was always a place where delicious meals were prepared and shared with those he cared about.
More than anything, Tom cherished time spent with his family and friends. He believed that life's best moments were those shared with loved ones. His kindness, humor, and generous nature made him a beloved husband, father, friend and a steady presence in the lives of many.
Tom was also a member of Madison Methodist Church. His faith played a meaningful role in his life that was a beautiful blend of adventure, love, and faith, leaving behind memories that will be cherished by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years Linda Ross Fenter; daughters Stephanie Fenter, Ginger Jones (Louis), Kim Ellis (Corbin); and grandchildren, Maggie Jones, Andrew Jones, Cooper Ellis, Riley Ellis, & Mason Ellis.
