Shelton Lee Holliday, Jr, 84, died on Sunday, May 3 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. He was a graduate of Hinds Junior College and went on to Mississippi College where he got his BA degree in English in 1953. After two years in the Army, serving in Korea, he came back to Mississippi College and graduated with his master's degree in English.
His teaching career began in 1956 at Inverness High School where he taught English, Spanish and Driver Education. In 1969 he began teaching at Indianola Academy. During his 16 years at Indianola he taught English and Drivers Education and was advisor for the school yearbook.
He retired in 1985 to come back to his hometown of Raymond. He became interested in daylilies and had a thriving business for a number of years. He joined the Jackson Hemerocallis Society and the AHS in 1987. He was elected president of the Jackson Hemerocallis (daylily) Society and was elected AHS Regional vice president for Mississippi – Alabama.
He stayed active working in his yard and doing for others up until his recent illness. Everyone around Raymond knew he made the best Peanut Brittle ever!
He found time to sing in the church choir where he had served for more than 60 years. He taught Sunday school many years in the children's department at First Baptist Church of Raymond. He served as a deacon both in the Delta and at Raymond.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Violet Evans Holliday and his father, Shelton L. Holliday, Sr. and brother, Maurice Holliday. He is survived by his sisters, Juanita Lewis and Peggy Rice of Raymond and Sharon Robinson (Buddy) of Madison, brothers, Beau Holliday (Dot) and Sidney Holliday (Delores) of Raymond. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 5, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the First Baptist Church of Raymond. On Wednesday, May 6, visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 and followed by a memorial service at First Baptist Church of Raymond. Interment will be at Raymond Cemetery.
