Obituary

Shelly Smyly Quick went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 10, 2024.

Shelly was born on September 11, 1936, to E L and Nellie Gray Smyly. She was born in Darlove, MS where she worked with her siblings and parents on a farm. Shelly graduated from Arcola High School, in Arcola, MS. After graduation she attended Mississippi College in Clinton. This is where she met and married her husband, Van D "Doc" Quick. She left MC so she could help put Doc through New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. After Seminary, Doc and Shelly moved to Memphis, TN where Doc served at Bellevue Baptist Church. While there, Shelly gave birth to their twin daughters, Sharon and Karon.

Shortly thereafter, Doc started a job with Mississippi College so the Quick family moved back to Clinton, MS. Shelly went back to college and finished her degree in Education at MC. She also completed a Master of Education and an Education Specialist degree from the Clinton University.

Shelly began teaching third grade at Clinton Park Elementary School in Clinton. When Clinton became a separate school district, Dr Virgil Beleu, Superintendent selected Mrs Quicķ as Principal of Northside Elementary School. She was the very first Principal at Northside. She loved working with the children and was known to buy shoes and coats for students that were in need. Mrs Quick would also take children to their homes if a parent forgot to pickup them up from school. Shelly retired from Clinton Schools then worked with student teachers from her Alma Mater, Mississippi College.

Shelly Quick loved sports. She enjoyed watching the MC Choctaws play ball – any kind. It has been told that she would yell to let the officials know when they made an errant call against the Choctaws.

Shelly is preceded in death by her husband, Van D "Doc" Quick, her parents E L and Nellie Gray Smyly, her brothers Robert Smyly and Walter Bernard Smyly and her younger sister Cherry Dyer.

She is survived by her daughters Sharon Wilson (Jim) of Lauderdale, MS and Karon McMillan (Dale) of Clinton, MS; her grandchildren Laura Wilson, Lauderdale, MS, Wendy McMillan Lomenick (Jay) of Mobile, AL and Jason McMillan (Susanna) of Clinton; three great grandchildren: Harper, Spencer and Reed Lomenick of Mobile, AL; and one brother Dr Dan Smyly (Gail) from the Atlanta, GA area. She also has many nieces and nephews.
