Sarah Michelle
Barker
May 19, 1990 – November 10, 2023
Sarah Michelle Barker, 33, of Clinton, MS, passed away on November 10, 2023. She was born on May 19, 1990, in Jackson, MS. Sarah was a beloved daughter of Bruce Barker and Sylvia Barker, and the cherished sister of Natalie Barker. She is also survived by her loyal dog, Zoey.
Sarah received her education from Clinton High School where she was passionate about band and made treasured friendships. She furthered her studies at Hinds Community College and the University of Mississippi, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Sarah's warm personality touched the lives of many. She had a passion for helping others and connecting with people, which led her to pursue a career as a Registered Nurse, specializing in pediatric psychology. She excelled in her early career and earned the Nurse Rookie of the Year award for excellence in nursing at UMMC, and the prestigious DAISY Award for extraordinary nurses. Sarah's dedication and compassion made a significant impact on the lives of her patients and their families.
After eight years working with children, Sarah shifted focus and became a home-health nurse for adults. She drove all around Jackson tending to the sick and often forgotten members of society. Patients would ask for her by name, not because she had some extraordinary medical expertise that set her apart from other nurses; rather, it was the unmistakable sense that she genuinely cared for them beyond their medical problems, a magic that transcended the ordinary.
Nothing gave Sarah more joy than books (though antique stores may be a close second). It didn't matter whether she ever got around to actually reading them; she simply loved to smell books, flip through the pages, buy them, and display them around her home on her seemingly endless supply of floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.
To the casual observer, it might seem that Sarah was drawn to dark things—her many tattoos, choice of dress, art, books, music, and occupation. Those who knew her best, however, know that the darkest of things need a certain kind of light that only Sarah possessed. Those of us lucky enough to have been around that light will forever be grateful to Sarah for that unique warmth and glow.
A visitation to honor Sarah's life will be held on Saturday, November 18, from 9:00 to 11:00 am at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Clinton, MS. Her final resting place will be Laredo, TX, where she spent her childhood summers with her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and many cousins.
Sarah will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched. May her generous spirit and kind heart continue to inspire us all.
