Sadie
Wright
December 27, 1925 – May 16, 2024
Sadie Wright passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 16, 2024. She was the last remaining member of her generation in the Ellis Wright Sr. family.
Sadie was born in Aberdeen, MS, on December 27, 1925. Her parents were Hal and Sadie Heard, longtime residents of Aberdeen. After graduating high school, Sadie received a Bachelor of Science degree at Belhaven College. In her junior year, she was elected May Queen.
She married her sweetheart, Tommy Wright, a native Jacksonian, in 1947. They were married for 51 years before his death in 1999. They lived in Jackson most of their married life, except for twelve years when Tommy was President and Chairman of the Board of Banker's Trust in Des Moines, Iowa. They later moved to Laurel, MS, where he was Chairman of the Board of the First National Bank.
Sadie enjoyed participating in community affairs. She was active in the Symphony League and the Mississippi Art Association. She was also on the YWCA board in Jackson and served as president of the board in Laurel.
Sadie was a loyal member of Christ United Church, attending the New Yorkers and Homebuilders Sunday School Classes. She was involved in the church's outreach ministry by participating in various mission programs. She was also on the administrative board. Church, family, and friends were the greatest joys in her life.
She enjoyed gardening and was a former member of the Sherwood Forest Garden Club. She was also a member of The LeDejeuner Club, the Southern Luncheon Club, and the Bridge Club.
Sadie was affectionately called Gammy by her grandchildren. Gammy will be remembered mostly for her love of God, her steadfast faith, how she lived her life, and the values she passed on to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include daughters Ginny Wright Phillips (Roy) and Olga Wright Griffin (Tom); grandchildren Margaret Griffin Murphy (Billy), Lynn Griffin Blake (Matt), Allison Bullock, Andy Phillips (Missy), and Stephen Phillips; great-grandchildren Will Murphy, Molly Murphy, Griffin Murphy, Thomas Blake, and Morgan Phillips; sister Kate Heard Daniel; honorary daughter Gail Mateer, and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Louis Coleman, a special longtime friend of Sadie's, and her wonderful caregivers at The Blake. They are incredibly grateful to her private caregivers: Clydorius Spires, Patricia Barnett, Ashley Taylor, and Emma Gilmore, who became like family members.
Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at Christ United Church. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by the service at 11:30 a.m.
Memorials in remembrance of Sadie may be made to French Camp Academy or Christ United Church.
