On Saturday, April 18, 2020, Ruth Flora Mae Baucum went home to be with Jesus, reunited with those friends and family members who passed away before her, at the age of 101. She passed peacefully in her granddaughter's home.
Mae was born March 5, 1919 in Leslie, Arkansas to Ulysses and Lavina Cummings. She and her 4 brothers (Dwight, Ross, Lewis, Paige)and 5 sisters (Mina, Clara, Daphne, Leah, Marie) grew up on the family farm there. In her early 30s, she met her future husband, Robert Austin Baucum II, in Little Rock, later marrying and living in Tupelo, Mississippi, and finally settling in Clinton, MS. Mae eventually took on a few different jobs outside the home, and stayed active in the community into her 90s. She helped raise her four grandchildren, seeing them all through to adulthood. She volunteered with the Clinton Welcome Center, the Clinton Nature Center, and Meals on Wheels. She was an active member of Clinton's First United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She was a fierce bridge player and played in several circles in Clinton. Mae stayed busy and involved in her community, rarely missing an opportunity to serve.
Mae is preceded in death by her husband, parents, and all but one of her siblings. Her youngest brother, Lewis, lives in Little Rock. She is survived by her son (Robert Baucum of Clinton), four grandchildren (Chris Baucum of Brandon, Ryan Baucum of Clinton, Michael Baucum of Clinton, and Amy Baucum of Brandon), and three great grandchildren (Rhett, Cole, John Avery).
Throughout her beautiful life, Mae made a difference in so many people's lives. Whether she was being the best grandmother anyone could've hoped for, whether she was having a blast playing bridge with her friends, whether she was welcoming people to the Clinton Nature Center or Visitor Center, whether she was delivering meals to people in need, whether she was sitting in a pew at FUMC, or whether she was enjoying coffee and cookies with her neighbors, Mae was living her life to the fullest and sharing love with others. For all of the love she shared, we are grateful. She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
