Obituary

Robert Harris Carmichael died Tuesday, June 20, 2023, during a brief stay in the hospital. Robert was born on January 17, 1954, in Utica, MS. He was the youngest of three children of Harris Carmichael and Marian Pickett Carmichael.

Robert is survived by his sister, Nancy Tenhet of Utica, his niece, Cathy Pressnell of Franklin, TN, and his nephew Daniel Mobley of Cullman, AL. He is also survied by his great nephews Wilson Greer Walker and Christian Carmichael Walker, his great niece Georgia Catherine Walker, and his sister-in-law Bonnie Greer Mobley. He is preceded in death by his parents Harris Carmichael and Marian Pickett Carmichael, his brother William (Billy) Daniel Carmichael, his paternal grandparents Daniel Alexander Carmichael and Allene Harris Carmichael, and his maternal grandparents Fred Newman Pickett and Eva Reed Pickett.

Robert graduated high school in 1972 from REBUL Academy in Hinds County. In 1974, he graduated from Hinds Junior College where he was editor of the school paper, The Hindsonian, his sophomore year. He graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1976, where he was editor of the Student Printz, the university's student newspaper. On December 6, 1976, he began his long tenure as a copy editor, first with The Jackson Daily News and then at The Clarion Ledger. Strokes in August 2011 and April 2012 ended his newspaper career, and he moved back to Utica to live in his family home.

He was excellent with words and enjoyed crossword puzzles and other word games. In the last several years, Robert enjoyed playing the domino game Chicken Foot every Monday with his sister and neighbors, including Freida Cook Bolton, who taught him the game. He was active in 4-H throughout junior high and high school, wining many ribbons and contests. He was voted 4-H member of the year in Hinds County. Later, he was invited to join the 4-H Honor Club of Hinds County and the Mississippi 4-H All Stars. He was very active in the 4-H All Star Interstate Conferences throughout his life.

Robert loved his family, especially his niece and nephew, and he was a devoted son, brother, uncle, nephew, and cousin. He made many friends through his work, and he was a good friend to all, making certain to stay in touch even when some moved away. Robert was considerate and always kept a keen sense of humor, especially in his retirement.

A memorial service honoring Robert's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at Bear Creek M.P. Church on Bear Creek Road, 7 miles east of Utica. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home of Raymond is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions can be made in Robert's memory to Bear Creek Cemetery in care of Inza Calloway, 10937 Tank Road, Crystal Springs, MS 39059.
