Obituary

Robert Alfred Greenfield passed away on July 27, 2021 in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Robert was born on June 10, 1935 in Bryant, South Dakota, and grew up with four brothers and one sister. Robert was the oldest son of Lela Mae Wolfe and Alfred Albert Greenfield, and the brother of James Greenfield, Nathan Greenfield, Charles Greenfield, Susan Greenfield, and Allen Greenfield. Robert is survived by his brother Allen Greenfield (Karen), wife Margaret Ann Holliday Greenfield, son Scott Greenfield, and daughters Kathy Newman (Larry), Debra Eggleston (Rocco), and Melissa Greenfield. Robert is also survived by his grandchildren Emmalea Griffith, Elizabeth Miller, Krystal Newman, Megan Winsor, Robert Newman, Ray Stine, and Julia Stine, as well as nine great grandchildren.

Robert joined the navy when he was 17, and served five years active duty. He then joined the army reserves and retired after 26 years of service. In 1959, he was honorably discharged from the navy in San Francisco. Robert met his wife Margaret in San Francisco shortly after, and they married in 1962. They had four children together and raised them in Pacifica, California. During this time, he worked for the San Francisco Municipal Railway as a bus driver, and then for United States Customs for another 15 years. Robert and his wife Margaret finally moved to Raymond, Mississippi in 1998, after they both retired. Robert was a man who loved community, which was the reason for his genuine love of talking to people and collecting their stories. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Raymond where he sang in the choir for many years, as well a member of the Masons and a former Masonic Lodge Master. Robert loved spending time around his garden and planting new flowers.

Robert's life was long, fulfilling, and amusing. Anyone lucky enough to speak with him knew he loved recalling stories of his childhood, the navy, and bus driving in San Francisco–he loved to talk to anyone about anything. Though he was humorous and light-hearted, Robert also lived an honest life: he was kind, loving, selfless, thoughtful, generous, and incredibly hardworking. His presence filled the room with warmth, and he had a striking ability to make everyone he spoke to feel heard and valued. Though the world and his community feel smaller with the void of such a phenomenal man, husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, may we all remember and celebrate him with joy and honor every day.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at First Baptist Church in Raymond, MS with visitation beginning at 9 a.m. Graveside services will follow at Raymond Cemetery.
