Obituary

Philip McKinley Barnes, 72, died December 27, 2020, at St. Dominic's Hospital in Jackson. A private, graveside service was held on December 30, 2020.

Philip was born on September 22, 1948 in Jackson, the son of the late Richard Grant Barnes and Barbara McKinley Barnes. Philip was a graduate of Provine High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts In Landscape Architecture at Mississippi State University. Philip also served in the Air National Guard for six years.

Philip was a licensed Landscape Architect, previously employed by Hall Landscape Company in Hilton Head, South Carolina, Central Mississippi Planning and Development District, and Mississippi Institute for Small Towns. Philip began a new career with the City of Jackson on February 18, 1998.
He served as the Facilities Manager in the Public Works Department. He was responsible for all the city-owned buildings in Jackson. His duties also involved interfacing with the private sector to benefit the City of Jackson. He was currently employed by the city at the time of his death. Philip enjoyed his coworkers, interacting with the employees in other city departments, and the many private vendors he dealt with in the Jackson community.

Philip met his wife Cheri on September 21, 1998, and it was "love at first sight" for both of them. They were married on August 7, 1999. Philip joined Cheri at First Baptist Jackson. Together they sang in First Baptist choir and were members of Emmaus Road Sunday School class. They were happy until the day Jesus took Philip home. Now Cheri, his family and friends rejoice knowing that someday they will be with him in heaven.

Philip is survived by older brothers Richard G. Barnes and Michael I. Barnes, and five beautiful daughters: Heather Barnes Cole, Carrie Barnes Duncan, Annie Barnes Gallegos, Merry McKinley Barnes, and Suzanne Landrum.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff of St. Dominic's Hospital for their excellent care.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Jackson Choir.
