Obituary

Doctor Nollie Wilbur Carpenter, Jr. of Clinton, MS, age 95 died Sunday, March 5, 2017 at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center from respiratory failure.
A native of New Augusta, MS, he was a 1939 graduate of the New Augusta High School. After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree from Mississippi College in 1943, he served as high school principle at Jefferson County Agricultural High School. During this time he met and married his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Ivey. Dr. Carpenter earned his Bachelor of Divinity from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 1949. From 1952 to 1954, he taught at Clark College in Newton, MS. While teaching, he earned his Doctorate of Theology from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 1953. In 1954, Dr. and Mrs. Carpenter moved to Clinton, MS, where they resided until their deaths. In Clinton, Dr. Carpenter served as professor of Sociology at Mississippi College. He earned his Masters of Arts in Sociology from University of Alabama in 1956. Dr. Carpenter served as Head of the Department of Sociology and Chair of the division of Social Studies from September 1969 until his retirement in May 1986. Dr. Carpenter was a former member of First Baptist Church of Clinton, Morrison Heights Baptist Church of Clinton, and Northminster Baptist Church of Jackson and recently a member of Northside Baptist Church of Clinton.
Dr. Carpenter is preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, Dorothy, his son, Don and his brother, Ray Carpenter. He is survived by his devoted daughter-in-law, Lacy Carpenter, granddaughter, Ashley Carpenter Shaffer, great-grandchildren, Molly and Anthony James Shaffer and several other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 11am Thursday, March 9, 2017 at Northside Baptist Church in Clinton. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 to 8:30pm at Wright Ferguson Funeral Home in Clinton and 10am Thursday until hour of service.
