Obituary

Nicholas Flynn Greener III of Jackson passed away on February 5, 2024, following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Greener was born in Fort Worth, Texas, February 20, 1937 to Perla Mae Powell Greener and Nicholas Flynn Greener, Jr.  Mr. Greener grew up in Jackson and attended Central High School.  He later attended Millsaps College, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha and served as pledge trainer.  His fraternity brothers will remember that he derived no greater pleasure than singing the Righteous Brothers classic, "Unchained Melody", at Pike fraternity parties.

Mr. Greener also attended Louisiana State University Graduate School of Banking and was in the banking industry in Jackson and Bay Springs.  He was a former member of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce and President of the Jackson Chapter of the American Institute of Banking.  While in Bay Springs, he was a member of the Bay Springs Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club, and was a Colonel of the staff of Governor John Bell Williams.  Following his banking career, Mr. Greener cofounded Gulf Guaranty Life Insurance Company.

One of his favorite pastimes after college was playing fast pitch softball for the Jackson Patrol team.  They traveled throughout the state playing tournaments and even qualified for the national fast-pitch tournament in Oklahoma City.  Mr. Greener made many lifelong friends through this sport.

Mr. Greener spent the majority of his later years at his home in Jackson.  He was an avid golfer and a long-time member of the Country Club of Jackson.  His favorite mode of transportation was his golf cart, the "Miss Emily", which he affectionately named after his late sister.  Nick was well loved by the staff and members of the Club, and considered them his extended family.
Mr. Greener also enjoyed watching golf and other sporting events from the comfort of his living room.  He was a huge fan of the New York Yankees and Boston Celtics, but was most passionate about the Masters golf tournament, which he attended for many years.

Mr. Greener was very blessed to have thirty five years of sobriety and attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings daily at the YANA Club for decades.  He served as a sponsor to many and cherished the fellowship shared among the members.

Mr. Greener was preceded in death by his parents, and by his sister Emily Ann Greener.

He is survived by son, Nicholas Flynn Greener IV of Tupelo; son, Jason Stribling Greener (Betsy) of Jackson; grandchildren Nicholas Tyler Greener (Taylor), Sarah Bethany Greener, and Thomas Stribling Greener.

His family extends love and appreciation for the kind care given by the staff at Castlewoods Place.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Nicholas Greener, Thomas Greener, William Griffin, John Andrew Griffin, David Kavanay, and Tim Kavanay.

A memorial service will be held at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home, 114 Burney Drive in Flowood on Friday, February 9, 2024 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.
