Obituary

Nellie Jean Carter Dukes (Nanaw) passed away peacefully on May 8, 2026. Nellie was born on February 23, 1937 to Lonnie and Essie Carter. She was married to Paul Dukes until his death in 1987. Nellie attended Pinelake Church.

Nellie graduated from Mississippi Baptist Hospital Gilfoy School of Nursing. As a registered nurse she worked at various hospitals and clinics in the Jackson area. For several years prior to retirement, she reviewed charts for the MS Foundation for Medical Care.

Nanaw had a servant’s heart and loved her children and grandchildren wholeheartedly. She leaves behind three sons, Craig (Rayann), Tim (Donna), and Steve, along with eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind a sister, Margaret Cameron, and several nieces and nephews.

Nellie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter-in-law Gay Dukes, and a sister, Lorine Stanley and brother, Tommy Carter.

Visitation will begin at 10:30 Tuesday, May 12 with a memorial service following at 11:30 at Wright & Ferguson in Flowood. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a charity of your choice.
