She is also mourned by a large extended family that include nieces, nephews, their spouses close friends and a number of other people including great-grandchildren on all sides, some connected by blood and all by heartstrings. "Granny" to her grandchildren and "Mama" to many others. Mildred Yarbrough loved greatly and was greatly loved.
Mrs. Yarbrough was one of the grassroots members of the Welfare Rights Organization of Jackson, MS. She fought endlessly to address problems of urban poverty by targeting the welfare system. The members of the Jackson Chapter fought to get adequate monthly grant, decent day care, and practical job-training programs. They believed the state had a responsibility to provide for all of its citizens in need. Beyond the organization, if you were in need, she was there to assist.
Besides helping others, her passion was cooking her sweet potato pies. She shared her pies with everyone. She loved her over easy eggs, toast and coffee - extra sweet of course. She did not care for TV too much, except for the news, in which everyone had to sshhh. Her neighborhood was her TV. She loved sitting outside on the porch, walking down the street to talk with neighbors and of course her B I N G O. That was her second home and the people who played along side her were her second family.
