Obituary

Michael H "Mike" Harrel l , 74, of Richland, passed peacefully at home on Saturday, September 17, 2022. The family will receive visitors Tuesday, September 20, 2022, from 4:00PM-8:00 PM at Broadmoor Baptist Church. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, September 21, 2022, at 10:00AM at B roadmoor Baptist Church.

He was born in Morton, Mississippi and lived in Lena during his formative years. He attended Lena High School, where he graduated as valedictorian. Mike went on to attend college on a basketball scholarship before making the decision to enlist in the United States Marine Corp. He served as a heavy artillery specialist, training others, earing Expert Marksman, and the Good Conduct Awards.

Mike had a career in the construction industry from 1971-2022. He was honored multiple times during his career. After many years as an active member of the Mississippi Associated Builders and Contractors (MABC), he received their 2008 Industry Person of the Year Award. He also received the chapter's distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2003 Mike was appointed by the Governor to serve on the Mississippi State Board of Contractors.

Mike had a gracious heart and enjoyed giving back to others in many ways. He conducted mission work in the construction of an orphanage in Africa. He also served on the Belhaven University Board, the Advisory Committee for Ivey Mechanical and participated in the construction of Habitat for Humanity homes.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Howie and Edris, and grandparents, Edward Coward and Johnnie Coward Harrell, and Hugh and Hattie Harrell.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Harrell; his daughter and son in law, Shannon and Jack Laseter; his son and daughter in law, Matthew and Kimberly Harrell; his grandchildren, Michael "Graham" Laseter and Addison Harrell; his brother and sister in law, Eddie and Marsha Harrell. He is deeply loved by nieces, nephews, extended family, and close friends.

First and foremost, in Mike's heart was his family. His legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of everyone that knew him.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Dr. Guangzhi Qu, MD and staff of Jackson Oncology Associates for the exceptional and compassionate care Mike received.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to have memorial contributions made to Hickory Ridge Baptist Church Building Fund.
