Mary Virginia
Phillips
September 1, 1926 – June 15, 2022
Mary Virginia Nichols Phillips departed this life on June 15, 2022. Mary Virginia was born September 1, 1926 to Thomas Vernon Nichols and Virginia McKie Nichols in Canton, Mississippi. She was a graduate of Canton High School and University of Mississippi. While at Ole Miss she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She graduated with a BA degree in English. It was there she met her husband to be Logan Burch Phillips. They were married on September 3, 1948.
Mary Virginia and Logan were founding members of St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Jackson where they were very active members. She was a Sunday School Teacher, Choir Member, Member of the Altar Guild, Lay Eucharistic Minister, served on the Vestry and was a Member of the Daughters of the King. She and Logan both made their Cursillo.
Mary Virginia, (Ginny, her grandmother name), was well loved by many for her friendly outgoing personality. "Spunky" is a word used by many to describe her candid demeanor. Always entertaining, even in her "covid detention" in the nursing home, she would sing for the staff and the patients her favorite hymns. You would often find the staff taking their breaks in her room, just to visit with "MVP" as they called her. Her positive outlook on life and eternity blessed her family and friends immeasurably. She loved deeply, and was deeply loved and now is in the arms of her Savior.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Logan B. Phillips; grandson, William "Nichols" Phillips, Jr.; daughter-in law, Janice Phillips; and brother, Thomas Vernon Nichols, Jr.
She is survived by her children, Logan B. Phillips, Jr. (Claire), William N. Phillips (Beverly), Virginia P. Primos (Don) and Vernon L. Phillips (Denise); her grandchildren, Logan B. Phillips, III, Meg Reeves (Len), S. Mason Phillips (Laura), Mallory Thompson, Meredith Lusco (Matthew), Mary Claire Primos, Paige McWay (Drew), Frances Phillips & Lamar Phillips; and her 100 year old sister, Wanda Nichols Doolittle. She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The Family members would like to thank nurses and all the staff at St. Catherine's, Dr. George Patton, Leslie Haines, and Dr. Ralph Sulser for their loving care of our mom over the years.
A funeral service will be held on Monday the 20th day of June at 11:00 AM at St. Philip's Episcopal Church with visitation beginning at 9:30 AM. Immediately following the service there will be a private Family burial at the Canton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Philip's Episcopal Church, Batson's Hospital for Children or a charity of choice.
