Mary Adams Kuhn, a beloved member of the Raymond, Mississippi community, passed away on July 5, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on November 12, 1941, the daughter of James H Adams and Mary Gillespie Adams, Mary lived a life defined by warmth, curiosity, and a deep love for the people and places she called home.
Mary graduated from Raymond High School in 1959 and went on to earn her master's degree in sociology from Ole Miss, where she was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. This launched a remarkable career in education. She taught sociology at Hinds Community College for an impressive 40 years, with a brief venture in social work, touching countless lives and shaping generations of students with her dedication and genuine care for others. Her colleagues and students alike knew her as someone who was kind to everyone she met.
While attending college, she met and married William H. Wardlaw and, in 1965, Mary welcomed twin daughters into the world, embracing motherhood with the same devotion she brought to everything in her life. She later met the love of her life, Philip Kuhn, at a meeting of the Mid-South Sociological Association whom she married in 1984. Together they built a wonderful life in Raymond, where her family has lived for generations.
Mary and Phil traveled extensively over the years, exploring the world together and collecting memories along the way. Mary had a deep love of nature and exploring other countries taking in their scenery and history. She captured so many of their adventures through her passion for photography. She discovered scuba diving late in life and has said that her quiet place became the ocean floor watching the fish and coral.
Mary had a passion for genealogy and preserving the rich history of Raymond, spending countless hours researching family lines and ensuring that local stories would be carried forward. She was deeply involved in her community through bridge groups, dinner clubs, book clubs, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Friends of Raymond, culture club and loved gardening at her home. She poured herself into these activities with enthusiasm and grace.
Mary was a proud grandmother to Erin Boerema, Victoria Brown, and Nicholas Boerema, and an adoring great-grandmother to Emilia Pittman, Wells Burchfield, and Sawyer Burchfield. She is survived by her husband, Philip Kuhn; her daughter, Mary Wardlaw Boerema; and her sister, Pattie Snowball (Mike); all of Raymond. Each of them will carry forward the legacy of love and kindness she so naturally embodied. She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter Susan Victoria Brown and her brother James Hermon Adams (Sheila).
May she rest in the peace she so generously gave to others throughout her life.
Services will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026 at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Raymond, Mississippi, with visitation beginning at 2:00 p.m. and service at 3:30 p.m. The family invites all who knew and loved Mary to join them in celebrating her extraordinary life.
