Marie Carmichael Mayer, 96, passed away Thursday, December 6, 2018 at her home in Brandon.
Marie was born in Houston, TX, the daughter of Guy Allen Carmichael and Florence Payne Carmichael. She was in Houston until the family moved to South Louisiana to follow the oil business. Her Dad worked for Gulf Oil Company. During that time she lived in DeQuincy and Golden Meadow, LA where she graduated as Salutatorian in 1940. She began college at Louisiana Tech before moving to LSU in Baton Rouge. She was in the AXD sorority. She was a member of the class of 1944, but was awarded her BS degree in Education early due to the shortage of teachers during WWII.
She began teaching at Orange High School in Orange, TX and later in Winnie, TX.
In 1947 she met the love of her life, Harold Mayer, a Petroleum Engineer for Gulf Oil Company during a function at First Baptist Church in Beaumont where they later married in 1948. They followed Harold's career to Fannett, Thompson, and Houston where she had son Michael Henry. Later moved to Kilgore where she had daughter Patricia Ann (Pam). Then they moved to Shreveport, LA and eventually to Jackson, MS. She and Harold have lived in Jackson since 1959 where she taught English at Bailey Jr. High School and eventually retired in 1985.
She was a member of Woodland Hills Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and served as librarian. She spent her retirement in Brandon living at the Reservoir, playing bridge, volunteering at the various exhibits in Jackson and travelling to all 7 continents. The last big trip was aboard the QE II leaving from Dubai, UAE traveling through the Suez Canal, Mediterranean Sea and on to New York City, a 26 day trip.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Florence Carmichael and her sister, Mildred Clotiaux. She is survived by husband Harold of Brandon, son Mike Mayer and wife Patti of Midland, TX, daughter Pam Stephenson and husband Steve of Madison, grandchildren Daniel Stephenson and wife Hannah of Nashville, TN, Ginny Herr and husband Bob of Madison, Michelle Hofer and husband Steven of Midland, TX, and Meghan Cotton and husband Christian of Midland, TX. There are 7 great grandchildren and 1 on the way. They are Harlow, Guy and Bo Stephenson of Nashville, TN, Cole Herr of Madison, MS, Wyatt Edwards of Midland, TX, Henry and Hattie Hofer of Midland, TX.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Woodland Hills Baptist Church in Jackson, with visitation beginning at 12pm. Mrs. Mayer will be laid to rest at Forest Park Cemetery in Houston, TX.
