Margaret was one of 14 children born to Archie and Estelle Shearer, and she was the last of the family to leave this earth. Born March 16, 1929, and died June 18, 2017.
Her early years were spent helping her father and her siblings farm in Bentonia, MS. As a teenager she moved to Jackson where she met her late husband, Fred Melton, to whom she was married for 50+ years. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at Griffith Memorial Baptist Church, and in 1957 became a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church where she was active until she passed away. Margaret worked as a hairdresser in Clinton until her retirement, but still curled hair in her kitchen for close friends until she was forced to stop due to illness. She was a wonderful cook, she loved gardening, and she loved children. She was known affectionately as grandmother to many neighborhood children.
She leaves behind a daughter Linda Lyall (Barry) and a son Jerry Melton (Teina). There are five grandchildren, Kristy Brumfield, Kelly McBride, Max Lyall, Heather Young and Courtney Melton, and 11 great grandchildren, 2 step great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8pm on Tuesday at Wright and Ferguson in Clinton and services will be on Wednesday at 2:00 pm at Hillcrest Baptist Church with family burial services following at Lakewood Memorial Park.
