Lucy Lee (Owen) Barnett was born in Memphis, Tennessee on October 4, 1924 and died on Monday, February 13, 2017 in Jackson, Mississippi, where she grew up. She was 92 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband, Judge James Arden Barnett, whom she married on March 4, 1945 when he returned from duty in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II. Her "Barney" passed away on December 5, 1988.
Lucy was the first of three daughters born to Dr. George W. Owen and Ruth Seavey Owen of Jackson. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her oldest daughter, Ruth Elizabeth "Betsy" Barnett. She is survived by her son, Rear Admiral James Arden Barnett, Jr., his wife Celia Grisham Barnett, and by her youngest daughter, Susan Barnett Perry. Lucy had four grandchildren, Wesley Susanna Perry, Carlee Barnett Perry, Elizabeth Reid Barnett, and Dr. Owen Barnett Arden and his wife, Caroline Fletcher Arden. She had one great-granddaughter, Margaret Anne Arden.
She is also survived by her sisters Nina Owen Kilgore and Shirley Owen Stodard and by her brother-in-law William Margrave Barnett and his wife, Barbara Easom Barnett, and her sister-in-law Rae Ragsdale Barnett. She is survived by six nieces Bitsy Kilgore Argo, Cindy Kilgore Rosato, Melissa Stodard Key, Laurie Barnett Hughes, Melissa Barnett Wyatt, Jennifer Barnett Harchenko, and six nephews Thomas Kilgore, George Kilgore, Dr. Michael Stodard, Paul Stodard, Arden Margrave Barnett, and Guy Glenn Barnett and their families.
Lucy expanded her family to include many people, including Barbara Neal Selby, Don Sawvel Neal, and Emily Hewitt Abraham, their spouses and families. She also incorporated her daughter-in-law's family, including JoAnn Grisham Bell, Irwin Bell, Rev. Lowell E. Grisham, Jr., Kathy McKellar Grisham, Allison Grisham Burkepile, Lawrence Gray Grisham, their spouses and families.
Lucy graduated from Central High School, attended Blue Mountain College and graduated from the University of Mississippi, where she was a Phi Mu and President of the YWCA.
Lucy was a dedicated citizen and volunteer. She was twice Regent of the Ralph Humphreys Chapter of DAR, twice President of her chapter of Colonial Dames XVII Century, State President of Daughters of Founders & Patriots of America, and served three consecutive terms as Board President of the Clinton Community Christian Corporation, serving on the board for over 30 years. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels for 27 years, and she served as a volunteer docent for four international exhibits. She was a volunteer greeter at the Natchez Trace Visitors Center until just two months before her death.
She was an active member and secretary of the Navy night fighter squadron CVLG(N) 41 reunion group, which met regularly from WWII until recently; she was one of the last surviving members.
Lucy was a member of First Baptist Church of Clinton for over 67 years, where she was a Sunday School teacher and leader and member of the choir and WMU. She loved to entertain her friends and was a prolific bridge player, her last game just three days before her death.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 16, 2017 from 4 to 7pm at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Clinton. Services will be held on Friday, February 17, 2017 at 11am at First Baptist Church of Clinton with a visitation one hour prior to service. Graveside services will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.
Lucy loved flowers, but contributions to First Baptist Church of Clinton in her memory would be appreciated.
