Lowell Floyd Stephens, 86, passed away quietly and peacefully on Friday, November 20, 2015 at his beloved Horseshoe Acres Farm, 1780 Pinehaven Drive in Clinton, Mississippi. Visitation is 5-8 PM on Monday November 23rd and 10-11 AM on Tuesday November 24th at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Clinton. Services are at 11AM on Tuesday at the funeral home with burial in Bolton cemetery.
Lowell was born in Purvis, MS to Alec F. and Mamie O. Stephens on August 24, 1929. His parents and his four siblings, one brother and three sisters, preceded him in death. He attended Purvis Public Schools and moved to Jackson in 1947. In 1948 he started a career with Deposit Guaranty National Bank as a messenger, and went on to become a Trust Officer in the Trust Department. He moved up the ranks within the bank over his 43 three year career, and retired in 1991 as Executive Vice President and Manager of the Trust Division. As a young banker, he successfully completed Law School and upon retiring from the bank, he began the practice of law focusing on Estate planning and Trusts, and continued to do so until the last year of his life.
He and his wife of 53 years, Juanita "Flap" Stephens, who preceded Lowell in death, became the proud parent of two sons, Bruce and Craig Stephens, both of whom today live on a portion of Horseshoe Acres. Lowell's love of horses led to the family's long and continuous affiliation with raising, showing, and selling Tennessee Walking horses. Flap, his sons, his grandchildren, and the children of many friends always showed their horses competitively in the show ring requiring trips to Tennessee and various southern states for horse show activities.
Lowell is survived by his sons, Bruce and his wife Kathy, and their four children, Raymond and his wife Erin, Latoyia, Chance and Paige, his son Craig and his wife Tammie, and their children Mary Culipher and Isaiah, and his great grandchildren, Skylar, Austin, Aiden, and Colton. He is also survived by many other nieces and nephews, and all of his other "adopted" children and grandchildren, through the farm and Walking Horse world.
He deeply loved his family, the Lord, and the Bolton United Methodist Church, his Horseshoe Acres Farm, and its Tennessee Walking horses, and his Collie Dogs. Also so important in his life were the friends and relationships he developed with his 43 year career with Deposit Guaranty National Bank.
Pall Bearers are Richard Crowder, Frank Parent, Jim Purdie, Tommy Hontzas, John Hulsebosch and Rebecca Rogers. Honorary Pallbearers are Members of the Deposit Guaranty National Bank Wednesday Morning Coffee Club, Members of the J. H.
