Lawrence Ray Greer, Sr., 80, of Madison, Mississippi, was called home to be with the Lord on July 15, 2024.
Lawrence was born to Samuel C. Greer and Laura Willie Eddington on January 5, 1944, in Carbondale, Illinois. Shortly after graduating from Attucks High School in 1962, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served his country honorably until October 1966.
Following his military service, Lawrence earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Southern Illinois University. His academic achievements paved the way for a distinguished, 35-year career in law enforcement, most notably as a Warden with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Throughout his career, Lawrence served with dedication and integrity. His generous and selfless mentorship helped advance the careers of numerous colleagues, and his commitment and exemplary service earned him numerous honors and accolades. Lawrence's legacy is marked by his unwavering dedication to his country and his family.
On July 3, 1999, Lawrence married the love of his life, Mildred Greer (nee Miller). Their love and companionship were a source of great joy and strength for Lawrence, and they shared many cherished memories together.
Lawrence recommitted to Christ as his savior on August 22, 2004, and he was baptized on October 3, 2004, at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Madison, Mississippi.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Mildred; four children, Melanie E. Jones (Charlie), Lawrence Ray Greer, Jr. (Vera), Jonathan N. Greer (LeShaundra), and Poppy V. Greer; two brothers, Charles M. Greer (Gloria) and Clayton E. Greer (Verlena); two sisters, Shirley Elugbadebo and Joan McAfee; cherished cousin, Charles Michael Greer; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; eight sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; his dedicated caregivers, Geraldine Tidmore, Ed Nash, and Isaac Craft; and a host of family, friends, and colleagues who will miss him dearly.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings, William English, Frank English, Etta Kelly, and Jean Gibbs.
