Laura Elizabeth "Betty" Hewes Scott passed away on Thursday, August 12, 2021.
The daughter of George P. and Gertrude Turner Hewes, she was born on August 29, 1925 and raised in Jackson, where she attended Central High School and Millsaps College.
In 1946, Betty married Tom B. Scott, Jr., and the couple lived in Oxford while Tom completed law school. Once back in Jackson, she began her work as the quintessential "how-does-she-do-it "spouse in her multiple roles as supportive wife, loving mother, and committed volunteer.
Betty's life reflects a resume of total dedication to philanthropy and promotion of civic and cultural endeavors. She led with distinction as President of the Junior League of Jackson, Goodwill Industries Volunteer Services, the Jackson Cancer League, Jackson Symphony League, and the Mississippi Art Association.
In addition to being Vice Chair of the Mississippi Arts Commission, she also served on numerous boards, including St. Andrew's Episcopal School, the YMCA, United Way of the Greater Jackson Area, Mississippi Educational Television, and the Community Foundation for Mississippi.
A life long Episcopalian, Betty worked tirelessly for St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral. She held many leadership positions including serving on the Vestry, Chair of the Altar Guild, and Chair of the Bazaar. She also served on the Board of St. Mark's Daycare Center and as a state representative for the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
Betty was Chair of the Inauguration Reception for Governor William Winter and Chair of the Friends of the Governor's Mansion. And with her husband Tom, she was honored by the Mississippi chapter of the Society to Prevent Blindness at its inaugural People of Vision Dinner.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 64 years, brother George P. Hewes, and sister-in-laws Helen Morrison Hewes and Sybil Scott Cummings. She is survived by four children, daughters Sharon Rhoden (Tom) and Deborah Helgeson (Scott) and sons Tom B. Scott, III (Janet) and Charles Christopher Scott, IV (Stephanie); four grandchildren, Thomas Scott Rhoden (Nicole), George Jeffrey Rhoden (Britton), Charles Christopher Scott, V, and Elizabeth Ann Scott; and five great-grandchildren, Lily Rhoden, Sophie Rhoden, Lola Rhoden, Noah Rhoden, and Brooks Rhoden. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Betty will always be remembered for her gracious hospitality and skills as a hostess, style maven, witty conversationalist, and impeccable gift giver. She did everything with ebullient enthusiasm and a sparkle in her eyes that made her innate joy for life apparent to everyone who crossed her path.
The Scott family wishes to thank the caregivers of Siena at St. Catherine's for their compassionate care of Betty in her final years.
Services will be held on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral at 11:30 a.m. Due to COVID-19 concerns, there will be no visitation, and masks are required to be worn during the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral - P.O. Box 1366, Jackson, MS 39215, Millsaps College - 1701 North State Street, Jackson, MS 39210, or Mississippi Symphony Orchestra - 201 E Pascagoula St, Jackson, MS 39201.
