Obituary

LaQuita Rose Koenig, 79, passed away Monday, August 22, 2022, at her home surrounded by her immediate family. LaQuita was born on December 31, 1942, in Memphis Tennessee to Noble and Grace Hughes. LaQuita lived in Memphis and worked as a hairdresser from high school until she married David John Koenig in 1973. Her talent as a hairdresser led to her winning many awards including several trips to Europe. Her husband's job with Bacardi Imports, Inc led their family to move several times.  In 1974 LaQuita, Dave and her son Bill Hawks moved to Chicago, in 1976 they moved to Detroit, and in 1980 they moved to Miami.

In 1982 their family moved to Jackson where they began D. J. Koenig and Associates, a wine and spirits brokerage. Laquita's love of wine and her aptitude for sales led her to a career that she was passionate about until she retired in 2012. LaQuita traveled the entire state where she sold the first bottles of wines such as Frances Ford Coppola, Robert Mondavi, and she and her son, Bill, even discovered Yellow Tail at New Orleans Food and Wine and had it brought to Mississippi. She treasured the memories of meeting some of the wine greats such as Robert Mondavi, Frances Ford Coppola and the Benziger family. Throughout her 30 years in the wine and spirits business she forged relationships with customers throughout the state and wine and spirits suppliers around the country who continually inquired about her until her death.

LaQuita was a faithful member of St Richard's Parrish. Laquita's love of antiquing and attending estate sales began when she lived in Detroit. Her home is filled with all of the treasures that she found over the years. She loved collecting crosses and Biblical works of art. She was an animal advocate and she continuously donated to multiple causes for animals. Throughout the years she had multiple Cavalier King Charles Spaniels as her companions.

LaQuita was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Morris Hughes, and his wife Jerry Mae Hughes. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, David John Koenig; son, William Noble Hawks and his wife, Christy and their daughter, Taylor with who she shared the same birthday (Dec 31); brother, Mack Hughes (Carolyn); nephews Steven and Michael Hughes; niece, Marti Powell; and the sister of her sister-in-law, Margie Skaggs.

The family is grateful for Dominique Patterson who was her faithful caregiver for 10 years as well as all of the other caregivers who lovingly cared for her in her home during her lengthy illness.
