Obituary

Johnny Ray Shirley of Flowood, MS passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving wife and daughters in the early morning hours of Monday, November 11th, 2024.  A lifelong resident of Jackson, Johnny (John) was born on July 1st, 1947 at St. Dominic's Hospital to R. F. and Vilinda Shirley. John attended Central High School in downtown Jackson, MS. Immediately following high school graduation, he attended Hinds Community College.

Johnny Ray enlisted in the Navy, where he honed his skills as an electrician. John then worked as an electrician for Southern Bell until 1979 when he began working for the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District. He spent the remainder of his career there,  retiring from his position as the dam supervisor for the Ross Barnett Reservoir in 2003.

John married Ella Marie Shirley on March 11, 1988. He lovingly referred to her as "Em." John was an avid sportsman who loved the outdoors. He delighted in taking his nephews Rob and Justin hunting and fishing. John enjoyed watching the rodeo, particularly bull riding, and made sure to attend the Dixie National Rodeo annually. One of his greatest joys was being a grandfather. He had a special way of making each grandchild feel happy and loved. He was immensely proud and supportive of his children and grandchildren. He attended many concerts, shows, games, and school events to cheer them on. He adored spending time with family and taking his dog, Buddy, for a ride in the truck. His loving wife, Em, stood faithfully by his side throughout his illness. He maintained a positive attitude, a calm demeanor, and that same sweet smile he was known for.

He is survived by his wife, Ella Marie Shirley, daughters Jennifer Littleton (Brad) and Megan McCaa (Bradley)

5 grandchildren: Lacey Littleton, Laura Littleton, Maxwell (Little John) McCaa, Jack McCaa, and Ella McCaa

2 Sisters: Judy Rutland (Larry) and Gloria Thrash

2 Nephews: Robb Rutland (Christy)  and Justin Rutland (Laura)

2 Nieces: Karen Nalywajko (Mark) and Angie Shirley

Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, Robert F. and Vilinda Shirley and his brothers; Robert H. and Barry M. Shirley.
