John Fallon Sullivan, Jr. (Jack), passed away peacefully at Clinton Healthcare on Sunday, April 19th.
Jack was born in Washington, D.C. on September 6th, 1935 to John and Thelma Sullivan. He grew up in Alexandria, Virginia; Dover, Delaware; and Richmond, Virginia. Upon graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, Jack matriculated to the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1958.
In the same year he graduated from VMI he married the love of his life, Eliza Buchanan Sullivan (Liza) of Rockbridge County, Virginia. Jack spent his 36 year career in public service working to build the Interstate Highway System with the Federal Highway Administration. Jack served in multiple positions and lived in twelve different locations across the country and ultimately served as the Division Administrator in Jackson for 13 years before retiring. As an advocate for safe and efficient travel, Jack was instrumental in developing and implementing the program Traffic Operations to Increase Capacity and Safety for FHWA.
Throughout his life, Jack supported his family, community, and church. He did this through coaching youth football, basketball, and baseball church and city league teams. He served as president of the PTA and as Boy Scout Troop leader in Madison, Wisconsin. He served as treasurer for the Men of the Church at the Clinton Methodist Church and as president of the Clinton Christian Community Center for 15 years.
Jack enjoyed making, and being, friends from various walks of his life such as the golf course, bridge and duplicate card game groups, VMI alumni, FHWA retiree groups, travel, and the Clinton Baptist Healthplex. He enjoyed telling (and retelling) his stories and jokes accumulated over his 90 years of life.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Liza, mother and father Thelma and John Fallon Sullivan, Sr., and brother William E. Sullivan (Bill). He is survived by his son John F. Sullivan III (Hope) of Harrisonburg, Va., son James Sterrett Sullivan (Suzanne) of Madison, Miss., grandson John Fallon Sullivan IV of Richmond, Virginia, brother Fred C. Sullivan (Jeannie) of West Grove, Pennsylvania, sister-in-law Ann Sullivan, and two nieces and a nephew.
Visitation will be Friday, April 24th at 9:30 am with funeral to follow at 11:00 am. Both visitation and funeral will be at Clinton Methodist Church. A brief graveside interment will follow the service at the Clinton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to the Clinton Christian Community Center or Clinton Methodist Church. Arrangements will be provided by Wright and Ferguson of Clinton.
The family would like to thank Clinton Healthcare for the services and care they provided in the last months of Jack's life.
