John Ross Hoover
January 18, 1946 – June 29, 2025
John Ross Hoover, age 79, passed away peacefully at his home in Clinton, Mississippi on Sunday, June 29, 2025. Born on January 18, 1946, in Little Rock, Arkansas, John was the beloved son of E.G. and Frances Hoover. He was raised in the Baptist tradition, which shaped his values and commitment to faith, family, and service.
John honorably served in the United States Army during the Vietnam era, stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and a Sharpshooter Badge for marksmanship.
While in Texas, John met the love of his life, Linda, in Fort Worth. The two built a life together filled with laughter, family, and strong faith. In his younger years, John was actively involved in church life and his daughters' activities. He coached church basketball teams and was a member of the Kiwanis Club. He had a big personality and a love for storytelling. His stories, often shared with enthusiasm and his own brand of humor, were a signature part of who he was and are fondly remembered by those who knew him best. He had a passion for golf, fishing, and model trains, but nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his grandchildren, who lovingly knew him as "Pawpaw."
He is survived by his devoted wife, Linda Hoover; three daughters: Jennifer Deaton and her husband Scott, Stephanie Ruple, and Melinda Watson and her husband Daniel. He is survived by his grandchildren: Brooke, Nathan, Kristin, Linda Rose, Isaac, and Eli; and by three great-grandchildren. His surviving siblings are Margaret, Dennis, and Pam. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jim.
A graveside service will be held at Gallman Cemetery in Gallman, Mississippi, officiated by Rev. Justin Medders, husband of John's granddaughter Brooke, on Thursday, July 3rd at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Heart Association or the Gary Sinise Foundation in John's memory.
