John Daniel
Davis Iii
September 24, 1939 – May 12, 2023
John Daniel Davis III of Flowood, MS traded his broken body for a whole one in the arms of his Savior on Friday, May 12, 2023, at the age of 83. He is survived by his son, John Daniel Davis IV of Flowood, MS (Lesley), his daughter, Virginia Anne Davis of Brandon, MS, his sister, Dorothy Alice Davis of Alto Loma, CA, and his three grandsons, Jack Davis of Flowood, MS, Charlie Davis of Bend, OR, and Will Davis of Flowood, MS. He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Alice Lloyd Davis West and his father, John Daniel Davis, Jr., both of Greenville, MS.
John (or John D., as many of his friends knew him) was born on September 24, 1939 in Greenville, MS, and after attending Greenville High School and graduating from Kemper Military School in Boonville, MO, he attended Mississippi College and then graduated from Mississippi State University in 1967 with a degree in chemical engineering after having served as an instructor in the US Army at Redstone Arsenal's Ordnance Guided Missile School in Huntsville, AL.
He worked in the paper manufacturing industry and then in engineering consulting prior to founding and operating Davis Specialty Chemicals in Ridgeland, MS, until he was 80 years old. He created and improved on formulae for the large variety of cleaning and janitorial chemicals which he manufactured and wholesaled as long as he was physically able. He was blessed for decades with able assistance in those efforts by Mrs. Christine Denson McDonald who was more family than employee.
John was a member of First Baptist Church, Jackson, MS attending while he was physically able. As all who knew him were aware, he was an avid fan of Mississippi State football and baseball, though as his mobility declined, he embraced any sport that the maroon and white might be playing on any ESPN+ network, including replays of recent wins. He would spend hours on the phone or by text dissecting teams and games with his dear friend, Mackie Beall. One could say that John is also "survived" by an enormous collection of maroon and white shirts and hats from various bowl game venues and the College World Series in Omaha.
Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, May 17, from 3:00-5:00 PM at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Flowood, MS, with a brief service in their chapel to follow. There will be a private family burial at Jessamine Cemetery in Ridgeland, MS. The family would like to thank those who cared for Mr. Davis these last few years at The Blake in Flowood, MS. In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for a donation to the Mississippi State University Foundation in his memory for student scholarship support.
