Obituary

On February 3, 2025, John Robinson Anderson, surrounded by family, peacefully departed this life at Ansonia Farm, the same place where he entered on February 12, 1935.  He was the second child of Rebecca and John Anderson.

When John's father died, John was emancipated in order to run the family farm, a job he performed unfailingly for 72 years.  At only eighteen years old, shortly after graduating from Flora High School in 1953, John dutifully put his college plans aside to assume a role that he was unsure he wanted, let alone prepared to undertake.  However, John soon realized that raising cattle and being outside on the land was his calling and passion.  He converted the cow-calf operation from Hereford cattle to Brangus, which was relatively untested at the time.  Fixated with breeding the perfect calf, John became widely respected for his knowledge and his willingness to share that knowledge.  Actively involved in the Mississippi Cattlemen's Association and the Brangus Breeders Association, at one point his herd contained 1200 brood cows.  John's dedication to building the Brangus breed was featured in articles published in the Brangus Journal and American Cattlemen. He loved working cattle and the men who worked alongside him.  In his final hours, he was still doing what he loved – counting cows, although there were no cattle present in his living room.

John was proud to be from Flora, Mississippi. However, he fortunately spent a few years in Jackson, where his family moved to make it easier for his father to operate the Union Stock Yards. While in elementary school in Jackson, John met Susan Davis, who would become the love of his life.  Although Susan left Jackson to attend college in Dallas, John had other plans.  Asking Susan to return to Jackson for a date, John knew that he could not let her get away.  So, he and his mother traveled to Dallas and brought a willing Susan back home with them. John and Susan married April 17, 1954, and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2024. Their devotion to each other has been an inspiration.

In his earlier years, John enjoyed traveling with his beautiful bride and could easily be enticed to take a quick flight from Jackson to New Orleans for a weekend getaway.  Always eager to share a meal, laughter, or an experience with friends and family, John enjoyed inviting those he loved to join he and Susan on their travels and adventures.

John loved his community until his death.  He donated the land for Flora's first public recreation space, a walking park, which he lovingly named after his grandmother, Elise G. Anderson.  Until his death, he enjoyed visiting with friends while having lunch at Annie M's or Railroad Pizza.  He also enjoyed offering free (and unlicensed) counseling to friends at his office, which despite its size is a well known landmark in Flora, at the corner of Highway 22 and Livingston Vernon Road.  John's beautiful blue eyes never lost their sparkle and were one of many things that drew others to him.  Perhaps it was his gentle nature or maybe his willingness to sit, listen, and stay awhile, but he had the innate ability of making others feel comfortable and to seek his guidance.  Those of us who were fortunate to know and love him witnessed his abundant generosity and are all better people as a result.  Although John and Susan did not have any biological children, John was a father to many.

John is survived by the love of his life, Susan Anderson.  In addition to his wife, he is survived by his niece, Rebecca Avery, and his nephews Benjamin Banahan (Susan Kurland) and John Banahan (Deborah).  He is also survived by his great-nephews and nieces:  Andy Banahan (Mary), Justin Avery, Meg Banahan, Christin Avery, Jessica McNeel (Taylor), Johnny Banahan (Taylor), and Abby Wills (Calen), as well as a host of great, great nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by wonderful friends who were like family, including Mae Bozeman, Trey and Candace Burton, and Toby Trowbridge, who were by his side during his final days.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Rebecca and John Anderson, as well as his beloved sister, Hart Anderson Banahan, and his sister-in-law, Marjorie Ann Harris (Don).

Visitation will be held at Flora Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 7th, with a Celebration of Life to follow immediately thereafter.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Flora Methodist Church.
