Obituary

Jewel LaDeane Robertson Dowdle Moore

February 21, 1926 – September 13, 2025

Jewel LaDeane Robertson was born in Oklahoma on February 21, 1926. She was the daughter of Ruben Boyd Robertson and Jewel McCarty Robertson. Her 3 siblings were Boyd, Jimmy and Marilin, all deceased. She grew up in Vernon, Alabama. Married in 1944 to James Smith Dowdle, they had 2 children: Jenta Patricia Boone (Ken) and James Smith Dowdle III (Sondra).

LaDeane graduated from Mississippi State College for Women with a bachelor's degree in business education. She received her master's degree from the University of Alabama, and her specialist's degree from Mississippi State University. After her husband died, LaDeane retired from teaching but continued being active in her church, Delta Kappa Gamma activities and helping with her grandchildren. She also gave bus tours in the Columbus area and served as a docent at White Arches during the Spring Pilgrimage. After being a widow for 16 years, she married Tom Moore of Columbus. When he passed away, she eventually moved to Sunny Brooks Estates in Madison, Mississippi. There, she enjoyed making new friends, playing scrabble, reading, listening to music and working crossword puzzles. When she fell and broke her ankle she moved to the Clinton Health Care facility.

She leaves 6 grandchildren: David and Alan Boone; Dara Ritter, Dade, Rob and Jed Dowdle plus 18 great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Bruce Lesley Scholarship Fund at Northside because of LaDeane's great appreciation and love of music.
