Obituary

Jerry Glynn Dennis, affectionately known by most of his coworkers and fellow hunters as "Shag," passed away on December 1, 2025, at the age of 64. Born in Jackson, Mississippi, on January 16, 1961, Jerry was the son of James and Irma Dean Dennis. He grew up in South Jackson and attended Wingfield High School, where he would meet the love of his life, Helen. The two were married on January 25, 1979, and shared that marriage until Helen's passing in 2016. Today, we take comfort in knowing that Jerry and Helen are together again, held in Heaven's peace.

Jerry spent his entire professional career at Armstrong Floor and Tile, where his long, flowing hair earned him the nickname "Shag." The name stuck, just like the many friendships he forged there over the years. Known for his work ethic, pranks, and quick-witted humor, Jerry was the kind of coworker everyone could depend on.

Outside of work, Jerry was an avid hunter and was exceptionally gifted at hunting deer. Anything roaming in the woods knew him by reputation, and deer especially checked twice before stepping out.  For Jerry, the outdoors wasn't just a pastime; it was his sanctuary except on Sundays. One time he promised God that if he were able to find the wall hanger he had just shot, he would never hunt another Sunday and God served that deer up 30 seconds later. Whether he was in a deer stand at sunrise or swapping stories around a campfire, he was right where he belonged.

Jerry was also a faithful member of Brandon Baptist Church in Brandon, Mississippi, where he served joyfully as a greeter. With a warm smile and the keys to the church golf cart, he was always ready to shuttle anyone who needed a lift—no tag needed, no season required.

He was preceded in death by his father, James; mother, Dean; beloved wife, Helen; sister, Deborah; and brother, Jimmy.

Jerry is survived by his children, Greg (Kelly) Dennis and Jessica (Meagan) Edwards; his sisters, Janice and Deidre; and his cherished grandchildren, Brad, Aubree, and Avery. His family and friends will remember him for his hard working nature, willingness to help anyone in need and his dead eye shot in the woods.

Visitation will be held at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Flowood, Mississippi, on Tuesday, December 9th, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with a service to follow at 12:00 p.m. A brief graveside service will take place at Crestview Cemetery in Brandon, Mississippi.

Jerry "Shag" Dennis lived a life full of love, faith, and the great outdoors. Though he has hung up his hunting gear for the last time, those who knew and loved him take comfort knowing he's now scouting the greenest fields Heaven has to offer.
