Obituary

James Watkins Street, 75, died Sunday November 8, 2015 at his home in Clinton. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM on Thursday November 12, 2015 followed by funeral services beginning at 12:30 PM all at Northside Baptist Church with full military honors following at the Clinton Cemetery.

Dr. Street was born in Jackson at the old Baptist Hospital the son of Hubert Grady and Ruth Watkins Street. He grew up in Clinton and was educated in the Clinton public schools then attended Mississippi College where he received Bachelor of Arts degree in English. He received his Bachelor of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He was ordained in the ministry at Clinton Baptist Church in 1966.

He began his ministry serving as youth minister at Alta Woods Baptist Church in Jackson; then served as associate pastor at Gentilly Baptist Church in New Orleans; then as pastor of several churches including; Crystal Springs Baptist Church in Tylertown, Enon Baptist Church, Franklinton, LA, First Baptist Church, Wiggins, First Baptist Church, Cleveland, and retiring from Calvary Baptist Church in February of 2002.

He served with pride as a Chaplain with the Mississippi National Guard for over 31 years. Colonel Street's last post was at HQ State Area Command as State Chaplain retiring in 1998 with permanent grade Colonel and retired grade Brigadier General.

Dr. Street was member and chairman of the Mississippi Baptist Health Systems Board of Trustees, a member of the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board, and as member and chairman of the Education Commission of the Mississippi Baptist Convention.

He was active in community affairs as a Rotarian, a participant in Volvo Recreational tennis league as well as coaching T-Ball, Pee Wee football and soccer. He enjoyed travelling, jogging and hiking in North Carolina.

One of his most valued associations was his nearly 40 year relationship with the Dialogue Gang, a group of ministers that met monthly to support and encourage one another.

Dr. Street was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Ruth Jean Street and his brother-in-law, Gary Cahill. He is survived by his wife of, not nearly enough years, Jimmie Carol Street; his sister, Margaret Cahill; his daughter, Christy Hawks (Bill); his son, Scott Lewis Street (Sheri); his step-daughters, Stephanie Desimone (Tom); Deanie Oswalt (Richard); Michael Ann Oropeza (Juan); Amanda Erin Giffin (Jon); his grandchildren, Mary Scott Street, Katherine Rene' Street, Taylor Elizabeth Hawks, Joseph Dearman (Stacy) Latasha Dean Oswalt, Rikki Miller (Lowell), Daniella Oropeza, Isabella Oropeza, Alec Lopez, Graham Giffin, and Ethan Giffin; his great grandchildren, Braedon Dearman, Gunnar Dearman, Gavin Miller, and Charley Grace Miller; his nieces, Amy Williamson (Michael), Laura Dyess (Barry); great niece, Rosemary Williamson; and numerous cousins.

The family is very grateful for his loving caregivers, Genora Boddy, Mac and Virgie Murriel, Tommie Rimmer and Mattie Bracey. Also, a special thanks to Home Health and Kare In Home Hospice.
