James Orin
Gavette
September 9, 1946 – September 13, 2025
James Orin Gavette, Ph.D., 79, of Natchez, Mississippi, passed away peacefully in Natchez after a long heroic battle with cancer. He was born on September 9, 1946, in San Mateo, California, the son of Orin Gavette and Laura Anders.
A man of intellect, creativity, and compassion, James devoted his life to education, faith, and family. He earned his undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi and went on to complete his Ph.D. at Southern Illinois University. For 25 years, he served at Jackson State University as Director of the Media Center, where he inspired students and colleagues alike with his vision and dedication to learning.
James was also a man of deep faith, finding fellowship and purpose as a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Natchez. He was passionate about philosophy and art, and he was a gifted musician who found joy in playing the guitar, ukulele, and harmonica. His creativity extended to writing essays about Natchez and his family, painting, and even bringing artistry into his yard work.
His last family gathering, held at Camp Bratton Green over Labor Day weekend, was a joyful reflection of his spirit. Surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandson, he played his ukulele while they swam and laughed together. During that weekend, he also enjoyed one last fishing trip, a pastime he cherished throughout his life.
Above all, James was a devoted family man. He is survived by his partner, Emily Fox; his four beloved daughters: Christy (Bill) Kelly, Melissa Earls (Troy Blackmon), Lauran (Michael) McArthur, and Danielle Gavette; his grandchildren: Cole (Ashlee) McCullough, Zach McCullough, Kayla Earls, Orin Gallagher, Anders Gallagher, Stella McArthur, and Lula McArthur; his great-grandson, Asher McCullough; his sister, Liz Turner; and his brother, Kenny Gavette.
James will be remembered for his wisdom, creativity, generosity, and unwavering devotion to family and community. His life was one of meaning and love, and his memory will be treasured by all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Natchez, MS, on September 27th, 2025 at 11:00 am, with a visitation before the service at 10:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate to Natchez Community Stewpot or Natchez Little Theatre.
